Found a blog post of a guy who re-purposed a programmable matrix keyboard for his CNC machine!
I thought it was a neat little project, and I very much approve of him actually making his own PCB for the new controller inside it.

Haven't heard of the controller he's using, if it has built in transistors for LEDs it could be worth a look.
