Some of the beam spring boards had 24 or 32 dipswitches that actually impacted how the keyboard performed... The ones on the M's and F's are just for keyboard ID, and I'm not certain they were ever used in a meaningful way.
But yes, they're DIP switches, and another thing that makes 1st-gen 122s unique. This one was the first I'd seen with red ones, too; they're usually white:
They're white here too, the dipswitch casing is red.
