My dad unknowingly threw away his old IBM Model M
« on: Wed, 22 June 2016, 21:30:54 »
I gave my Dad my Das a few years ago because his Model M was taking up too much room on his table. I went back home a few weeks ago and I couldn't find it. Turns out that he simply threw it in the garbage when it was fully functional. Ouch.. I really wanted it. Should have taken it earlier I guess..

It also hurts me everytime I think about where my Dad got it from. His old workplace had tons of them lying around (lots of older computer parts) and nobody cared about them. The company's gone now but if only I had known better before they closed down. Argh..

To this day, I can't look at or think about a Model M without feeling a bit of regret.

There's only one way to remedy your feelings of regret. You must seek out a Model M keyboard, soon you shall begin your journey. I would totally give you a few heart containers and a sword if this was the beginning of a Zelda game..

On the table being used, right? That's what OP is saying: that it should still be in his dad's house. Duh.

IBM Model M's still get saved, even to this day so it's not all bad.  Maybe this will perk you up.  Here's my very recent IBM Model M Rescue posted at DT.

I feel your pain, man.

A few years ago at a flea market I met a guy who was selling dozens of rubber-dome IBM keyboards. I asked him about the Model M ... "Oh, I had some, but I threw them away. I didn't think anyone would be interested in them.".

I'm glad you could rescue them! :)

If they are new, that's at least EUR 3000 worth of keyboards ...

It should be illegal to bin/recycle good keyboards.

"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

a few years ago my dad threw out a computer I had gotten from my grandparents basement. I think it was a zenith eazypc, which could have linear alps switches (?). I wish I had actually looked into the thing before he got rid of it   :(

I feel a little less regret now lol thanks guys.

I do hope to find a Model M one day. My dream is to one day find one at a garage sale or something. It would be extra meaningful for me.

One day you're going to wake up with no job and no money and no wife because you resorted to keyboards. You'll die cold and alone with the keyboard that started it all.

Yeah most likely. The wife is already sick of my keyboard obsession.
