Shouldn't we limit this to production models?  Anybody can make a keyboard out of admantium and inflate its price.

Steampunk or "art" keyboards should have a thread of their own, not tied to price.
"However, even though I was born in the Mesozoic, I do know what anyone who wants to reach out to young people should say: Billionaires took your money. They took your chance to buy a home. They took your chance at a good education. They stole your opportunities. Billionaires took the things you want in life. If you really want those things, you have to take them back.
That's the message. That's the whole message. Say that every day, not just to reach America's frustrated young white men, but people of every age, race, and gender.

Those datamancers aren't really meant to be used for productivity. The design actually makes it quite annoying to use. It only exists so super rich people can show off. That being said they are very cool looking and i wonder why there aren't keycaps styled like that for any other keyboard.

You can buy the keycaps and just put them on any Cherry MX board.  Massdrop has run them a couple of times now despite them not being very popular.  :P

Personally, a "steampunk F-122" has been on my project list for several years. However, practical guy that I am, it will have to be something that I can use without compromise.

So, for starters, I will not fabricate "funky" keys and will keep a stock IBM-BS stem+cap system, although blanks, colors, and dye jobs will be on the table. Lesser-used keys around the perimeter might be fair game for "odd" capping.

The thing that makes this completely viable is that the internal assembly screws down into the metal bottom pan, and with these 2 things intact, you can add all the pipes and gears and accessories that you want.

If I could strip the front plate and get it plated in copper or brass, now THAT would be a great starting point!

Oh, I'd love to have a sold brass case for a good keyboard!

Too bad we're all using different keyboards or we could make a project of it ...

I thought so, it doesn't really look as if you could type on it well.

I like designs like the Model M.  Imagine that in solid brass, with brass key caps, in all it's complicated simplicity.  Or a Model F with 122 keys ...

They must be because I couldn't type on a keyboard like that I would lose all my ****s.

Since the keyboard that I plan to base the project on is just over 30 years old, I would say that the timing is about right.

I agree that when it is bad, which is the majority of the time, it is really stupid and embarrassing.

But when it is good, it can be exceptional.

And that is as true of the books as it is of the hardware.

What's wrong with steampunk?

Everyone designing, building, buying, using or appreciating a mechanical keyboard is a steampunk at heart, even if the very keyboard doesn't have a distinctly steampunkish look or feel to it.

The plasticpunks of nowadays please keep in mind that plastic is in many cases merely a poor substitute for better materials.
