Das Keyboard 5Q: The Cloud Connected Keyboard
« on: Fri, 01 July 2016, 20:46:09 »
Anyone in on this one?

Das Keyboards are pretty solid, but that said, the cloud thing really turned me off of looking at it at all.  Seems gimmicky, and trying to cash off of the current 'cloud' craze.

I can't say I have ever wanted this. This is like having a "cloud" connected bicycle to monitor tire pressure or something... entirely pointless.

In this case, all I can think of is that crap that Razer tries to shove down your throat by forcing you to use their online services just to adjust settings that could be saved on the device itself. It's nothing to help the consumer and more to help Razer. It's one main reason I returned their mouse (besides it being uncomfortable) and will never buy another product of their's. DAS seems to be more and more showing themselves to be a gimmicky company, showing a slick image without much substance behind it.

They throw out the only example I can think of that is remotely productivity related - a light that changes colors based on your build status. (Don't say email, because you always have email.) But the build status niche is pretty much already occupied by the big wall-mount display at work, and I don't care at home.

If I can tie an onion to my belt for a second, the Internet of Trash really does need serious fixing. If for some reason you desperately need a connected coffee mug, please make sure you buy it from someone who provides updates, so that when it is rooted and used in a DOS attack, at least you can stop it. Old man rant off.

Anyway, this seems ripe for attacking. If someone in your office shows up with one, they deserve Disco-Keyboard until they can figure out how to stop it.

Honestly between the latest "gaming line"...
The switch to Greetech switches (If you are going to switch off Cherry why not Gaterons?)
The exceptionally over priced MSRP on their boards for what you actually get

And now weird stuff like this?

Das is going downhill Super fast IMO.

Now these new non MX stem compatible Gamma Zulu switches that look like the Romer-G switches...

What is Das thinking lately?

It's total rubbish, a security nightmare, and a marketing bull****. NOTHING the keyboard does, requires the internet, let alone a cloud connected keyboard. Nothing. You can make the keyboard present itself as an USB Storage device, for example, and present virtual files, through which you can control the leds. This way, you have an API on the keyboard that is not internet connected. Mind you, it's still a huge risk, because pretty much any program can write there, unless you go to great lengths to protect it... and that's far from trivial. Anyway, the stock market thing could be a small program that checks whatever it needs on the internet, and then writes to these virtual files. The build stuff too, that doesn't even need the net.

There are many ways to do what this keyboard is said to do, without making it cloud connected.

But if they did that, they wouldn't have your data! You woludn't register your keyboard, they wouldn't know what "apps" you run on it, they wouldn't be able to spy on what you do with it, and they couldn't sell that to ad companies and the like. In short, profits would plummet, not to mention one NEEDS to ride the IoT hype! When you can have cloud connected dildos, you MUST have cloud connected keyboards too, right? RIGHT?

I agree. Everything about this screams security issues to me. I mean..bluetooth is probably more secure, and would be more widely accepted. Don't get things for the cloud because it's "cloud connected".

With the DAS 4/4C they had released the thinnest MX keyboards you can buy on the market.  It would have been nice to see them take that further with a DAS 5 line that used the new Kailh low profile ML clones.

The only thing that interests me is the Romer-G switches. Maybe someday we'll see some good keycaps.

Other than that, this thing looks pretty stupid.

"Internet of things" is such a great idea. Hack the guy's keyboard, make it display a marquee that scrolls "YOU ARE A ****TARD FOR BUYING AN ASS KEYBOARD " all the time ...

Hmm.. I'm not sure these are identical to Romer-G switches.
The Romer-G have 3.0 mm travel and were mentioned to last for 70 million key presses.
These "Gamma Zulu" switches are supposed to have 3.5 mm travel and last for 100 million.
Other than that, the specs are very similar: same force at the pressure point and force at actuation. The "Gamma Zulu" may have sharper tactility according to the graph on the Kickstarter page, but I would not trust that.

BTW, added to the Deskthority Wiki.

To be honest, i want to see someone from the MechKB get a review copy so we can actually find out what the bloody thing is. However, I don't think Das would willing let us take a look at the internals.

Yeah, but it makes it seem like the only keys the have tactility or F, J, and the 5 key on the numberpad. What, are all the rest linear? This whole thing is confusing. I like innovation and am all for cherry and its clones having less sway over the market. Even though I love my gateron switches, having an idea stay the same forever isn't necessarily a good thing.
