Quiet blues?
« on: Mon, 04 July 2016, 09:03:01 »
Are there switches which resemble the feel of blue switches, but are quiet? I don't need the audible feedback, but I like the clicky feel feelback.

A coworker asked me to use a quieter keyboard (then the Rapoo v500 with blues, in this case). I'm in search for a (new or old) tenkey-less; 'normal' layout of the keys (space between the F4/F5 & F8/F9, Pause/Break at the top right), no floating keys. For typing. I don't use the keyboard for gaming.

Wrong forum my friend. But to try to answer your question, I would try matias quiet click switches if youre looking for new, or try Alps SKCM creams.

Thanks. I surfed the Matias site; it seems there's no 'normal layout' tenkeyless Matias keyboard; also not in the past.
Searching for a tenkeyless Alps now...

This post would fall into the keyboards forum. As for a tkl alps board, check out the ducky 1087xm, but they are very hard to find. I think the matias v80 would be your best bet. https://mechanicalkeyboards.com/shop/index.php?l=product_detail&p=1324

Moved this over to keyboards.

I can't comment on any of the alps discussion, but I was in a similar situation a few years ago. For me, the solution was MX clears. Although they're heavier than MX blues, they have similar tactile feedback (although not generated in exactly the same way). If you like the feel of MX clears but want something lighter, purple zealios have the same stem shape with a lighter spring -- but I don't think any keyboard comes stock with zealios.

Browns are about as light as blues, but for me the tactility wasn't enough. I actually moved away from browns to blues, then started looking for something better.

Ergo whites, i.e., Cherry MX White with a lighter spring, but they're quite inconsistent.
Vintage MX Blue is quieter than its modern counterpart and has different, more refined tactility.

However, I don't really understand the appeal of modern MX Blue beyond availability (and keycap compatibility) anyway, because it's a mediocre switch compared to other clicky/tactile switches.

Another vote for Matias Quiet. If you have to go Cherry, I actually like Zealios a lot. If you don't wanna pay for those, maybe Gateron Browns or Cherry MX Clears are more your speed. I use Stock MX Clears in my work keyboard.

Matias Quiet Clicks. They are more tactile than MX Blues but are very quiet and smoother than MX Blues. I found I type much faster and more accurately on them then on MX Blues.

The KBParadise V80 uses them, it's a pretty well built board that has a "normal" tenkeyless layout. You can buy them at www.mechanicalkeyboards.com and Ebay (mk.com is cheaper usually)

I highly recommend paying a little extra and getting the versions that come with the double shot Tai-Hao sets because the stock keycaps aren't really that good.

Topre realforce 87u is tactile and fairly quiet, has the "normal" you are looking for too

MX Clears/Zealios for Cherry, RF 55g for Topre, or Matias Quiet Click for Alps.  I use Clears now at home and my wife says they are WAY quieter than the Browns I was using before, which doesn't really make sense but I'm not gonna argue about it :)

Maybe since they're heavier, you don't bottom out as much, so she doesn't hear that and thinks the keyboards quieter?

Topre is actually good as well.  Much quieter than MX Blues and very tactile.  I use Topre on my work board.  Both Topre and Matias/Alps are a different feel with the tactility than any MX switch due to the way they're designed.  Most who've tried them prefer them to MX, but not all.

Topre, Quiet Clicks, vintage alps, Zealios, Ergo Clears probably in that order (can swap around the top 3 i suppose) for quiet, tactile switches that are great.

That's certainly possible, I also have better quality caps on the Clears so that could make some difference as well.

You know how there's MX white, and it's a soft click? I've often wondered why there isn't a soft click variant of blue. It couldn't be that hard to do. I'd love to do that myself but I've never soldered anything before and don't have the materials to do so. It'd be an interesting project for sure though. I have a fantasy about 45 g gold plated springs with soft click gateron blues. One day I'm going to create a board that has this.

Cherry MX is king.  Ignore the haters.

67g or 78g Zealios might feel similar.  But nothing will perfectly capture the feel of MX Blues except for MX Blues (and maybe some of the clones).

Gateron Blues, lubed, vinyl sticker bottoms (inside the switch), stiffer springs (I like the 62g GP Sprit). A single O-ring at the top will finish it out. Comes very close to feeling like a Matias/Alps Quiet Click but with a slightly lower actuation point.

Sooo very tactile. More Quiet than my silenced Topre boards.
