Quality of IBM Barrel Frames
« on: Tue, 26 July 2016, 06:56:52 »
I currently have 5 101 key Model Ms from 1988 to 1994 and my latest 2 got me wondering.

The latest 2 keyboards are from 1993-1994 with the drainage channels and the frames have cracked along the flex lines. One above ASDF the other on the numpad.  I didn't see this on my 1988 keyboard and other non-drainage frame and it get me to thinking.

I'm aware that certain plastics will break down over time due to chemical decomposition of the various additives. What I'm wondering is if in 1988 the keyboard manufacturers were using more virgin plastic and less regrind? Many companies now, if not all, will grind up parts that don't meet specification and re-introduce them into the process as a percentage of the mix (20% regrind, 80% virgin). That % is critical as too much regrind will reduce the overall quality of the part and too little will drive up the cost.

I wonder if that is what is going here. The 1988 keyboard was more virgin plastic and the 1994 was more regrind.

It's also conceivable that when they created the new molds with the drainage channels that they also made the frame thinner to save on material. Or that the formula changed and the additives are different.

I currently have an SSK in pretty sorry shape.  Its barrel frame is in the condition that you described.

My Model M has the same problem.  I put superglue on the cracks and bolted it together.  That way it holds the curve, and the crack doesn't make it to the other end (hopefully).

Model M barrel frame cracks.
Model F barrel frame rusts.

There's no perfect solution, is there?

Rusty and intact is better than plastic and cracked

Solution is that the barrel frame should be made out of the same material as the back plates.  They almost never rust.

Old-fashioned model cement works well on these.
"However, even though I was born in the Mesozoic, I do know what anyone who wants to reach out to young people should say: Billionaires took your money. They took your chance to buy a home. They took your chance at a good education. They stole your opportunities. Billionaires took the things you want in life. If you really want those things, you have to take them back.
That's the message. That's the whole message. Say that every day, not just to reach America's frustrated young white men, but people of every age, race, and gender.
Late-stage capitalism is a wealth-concentration engine, focused on vacuuming up every dollar and putting it in as few hands as possible. Republicans are helping that vacuum suck.
How does a tiny fraction of the population get away with this? They do it by dividing the other 99% of Americans against themselves."
