I Had to Silence My Type-S...
« on: Wed, 03 August 2016, 00:33:00 »
So I've had my HHKB Type-S since February.  It's a dream (for the most part).  the spacebar makes a bit of noise (rattle/clack on the downstroke), and I always assumed it was the plastic stabilizer hitting the wire inside and I'd eventually need to open it up and lube it.  Fast forward to today, and I'm looking at Krytox mixes, prepared to do what I must.  I recently ordered 2 PBT spacebars from Massdrop to try instead of the ABS one to see if there was any difference. Waiting on those.

I was messing around trying to re-seat the spacebar today (it sometimes works to temporarily get rid of the rattle), and I had a piece of paper towel nearby.  I folded one piece over each rubber 'bumper' on either side of the spacebar switch housing and set the keycap in.  It's now DIFFICULT to hear when pressing it and the key travel hasn't changed almost at all.  I'm now assuming the spacebar cap has been hitting the housing for the switch in the middle, and can almost hear the sound coming from the center of the key if I forcefully push it down in the middle.  Is this a problem many Type-S's have?  And what would be a good alternative to using flimsy paper towel?  Maybe EK's soft landing pads over the center switch housing?
