Just registered, finally
« on: Tue, 16 August 2016, 15:45:15 »
Hello everybody,

I've known geelhack for some years, and I used to read the forum from time to time. Recently I got some time to spend on my mechanical keyboards hobby, and I thought it would be better to register in order to keep track of the topics.

About the main topic here, these are my main boards:
  • A Unicomp Classic 105 Black/Grey USB, Spanish ISO layout, which I'm using at home, right now.
  • A black Filco Majestouch-2, TKL, UK ISO, with Cherry MX Brown switches, which I use at the office.
  • A black KBT Pure, 60%, ANSI, with Cherry MX Blues, which I use both at home and the office.

About keycaps, I just have two extra sets for the Filco. First I used a black blank Filco keycap set configured for Spanish, then I switched to the original UK Filco keyset, and now I'm using the double shot UK Filco set.

About my layouts, I have to write in English, Spanish, and Catalan, so I use:
  • ISO-ES for the Unicomp.
  • ISO-UK extended for the Filco (that is, the gb:extd XKB layout in Linux).
  • ANSI-US international for the KBT (the us:intl XKB layout).

I also swap the Control and Caps Lock keys functions since I learnt to use computers. I started with with computers using a Sony HB-10P MSX system, and after that learning about them using different Digital VT terminals, before I got my hands on a PC AT/XT keyboard.

I have also used other boards and switches. Some of them old, which I can't remember, apart from a borrowed Model M, which made me try the Unicomp years later. Some newer, like Vortex Pok3rs and KBParadise V60s, with MX clears, browns, greens and blues. And of course, some good and bad rubber domes.

Still my favourite MX board is the KBT Pure. I like the light case, the feel of the PCB mounted blues, and the modifier layout and Fn layer (I don't ever use the right "Win" Key, but I use the right "Alt Gr" a lot).

Now I'm waiting for a Planck PCB and plate, some Gaterons, and looking for some MX stabilizers and keycaps to build my first keyboard. Maybe in September. Then I can start to try my own layouts. :D

It's been a long introduction, now I can only repeat myself in other posts... :(

Btw, you have probably guessed it by now, but English is not my native language, I'm from Barcelona.

Thanks if you got this far!

Welcome to Geekhack!

I hadn't guessed that English is not your natural language, btw.  When I got that far, I went back and re-read some of your post, and your English is excellent!

I did briefly wonder if you worked as a translator, what with frequent usage of both UK and Spanish ISO :))

You certainly seem to have tried a large number of keyboards and switches - I guess you have found your favourite few combinations.

But ... you haven't mentioned any Topre keyboards ;)

And for something slightly different in MX stabilisers ... https://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=83833.0

It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

Thank you very much for your welcome! An for your compliments!

I just happen to use English it almost on a daily basis. And having studied IT helps too: almost all books and good documentation are in English.

After I got the KBT I spent some time with it for working, before returning to the Filco and deciding to try the UK layout. I found it easy to change between the three keyboards with different layouts, and just kept going on like this.

Thanks for pointing out that thread, I missed it!

And you're right... an HHKB has been hard to skip this time, I really want to get one. But I have a budget, and I thought I would rather spend the money on that small keyboard project.

You're doing better than me then - I have difficulty swapping between ANSI variants :))

Although I am now accustomed to the differences between ANSI and HHKB2 layout, and I don't do \\\\\\ very often any more.
