Got addicted quick . . .
« on: Wed, 24 August 2016, 21:50:31 »
Hello!

I've been in to mechanical keyboards for about a month or so and have gotten massively addicted in the process. I have already amassed two boards, numerous switches, have 78g and 65g zealios on order in the GB, and an Overzealous First Build of a Satan GH60 with Holtite sockets for the switches and LEDs to make it hotswappable.

I would imagine that this all started when a co-worked of mine had one of those little CMStorm 6 switch testers on his desk. I clicked all the switches on it and I was immediately drawn to the Cherry Clear. . . I had to find something with the clear. switch to try out. Luckily, that same co-worker had a WASD Code with clears at his house, he brought that in and i tested it out. It worked well for the day I used it in the office vs. a dell OEM keyboard. My mind was set, I needed a board with Cherry Clears, so after some browsing of options, and not really knowing much better, I went on a hunt to find a Code with Cherry Clears on it. I looked up their website and there it was, but at way more of a price than i was prepared (at the time. . . ) to spend on a keyboard! I searched around and ended up joining on to that which is, MassDrop, in hopes that my one request for the WASD Code would be what pushed it over. A few weeks later, I had browsed the mechanical keyboard section and the site over all enough times to have bought a new set of speakers, a WASD Code with Clears. After reading the comments there I stumbled upon this site and just lurked without registering, just in the shadows, reading, reading, looking at the pictures of all the sweet keyboards, more reading and looking at parts and google searches. . . Well now that I had a mehcanical keyboard at home, I needed one for work. . . I ended up taking the code to work. . . but this is what started me buying a second, and a third keyboard. . .

Curent Boards:
WASD Code with Cherry Clears,

TeamWofl Zhuque+ TKL, Gateron Brown Alphas, Gateron Green Functions and Modifiers, Outemu Black Space bar, Outemu Red Backspace, Removable USB mod (in micro ), LEDs all replaced with 1206 Green LEDS, Logo removed, Case and plate 'Plasti-dip'd' dark grey.

Another TeamWolf But the X08 with black caps, pretty much a full size Zhuque+ that is going to get the same treatment as the TKL, but maybe a different color, and probably mini usb, if i can order the right breakout board!. I ordered it with the outemu black switches, as I have a load of blues from the other board.

Thanks,

I come from a highly skilled soldering background from doing electronics kits as a kid and building mini quad copters, so the LEDs were easy and micro USB were easy. I have no problem soldering, but I do have an issue with being indecisive, hence the holtite sockets for the GH60

Welcome to Geekhack!

I also have a CODE with MX clears (mine is TKL).  It's fantastic!

Does yours ping much?  Apparently it is a problem with a lot of CODEs, especially those with clears.  Mine doesn't.

When starting out you should try as many different switches as you can.  Looks like you've achieved that with only 2 keyboards :D
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada
