Crap.  I was expecting a little more flaming...

I really feel sorry for you lal. To think that you compare me to the evils that have been done by cultists the world over is really disturbing.

Well, I'm sorry to disturb you and I don't wanted to say you're as evil as scientology.  Not yet.  But sometimes Topre fans just sound a lot like "believers".

If I start hanging around Yahoo Japan and Ebay.de I'll be admitting I'm an addict.

$230 US - not bad given that numpad's rarity.

I figured as much.  I was leaning more towards witweb winning this one.

Lam made an excellent review of the A01. Just search 'IBM A01' in Geekhack's wonderful and unused search engine.

The self-contained mechanisms are almost worth it alone.  It should make the 'board easy to clean and maintain.

BTW, you're free to make fun of mechanical switch lovers and especially me, too :)

Why would I do that? I have actually tried all the mechanical switch boards and even though I don't like all of them I would not give someone a hard time about choosing one because we all like different things. As long as the board is a quality board I have no real problems with it even if I don't like it. I will say why I don't like it but I will not go out of my way to aggravate those that do. And lets be honest even with mechanical boards you need to spend some time with the board before forming a reasoned opinion of the board. And on some especially the lighter boards (Cherry browns) you really need to spend some time on it to fully appreciate the switch. The same goes for Topre switches to really appreciate it you have spend some time using it and like the Cherry browns if you are switching between boards your fingers will not develop the required lighter touch to fully appreciate the switch.

But hey I know you enjoy going out of your way to aggravate and ridicule those of use that have decided that we prefer the Topre. So go right ahead because every time you do all you do is remind us of how ignorant and closed minded you really are. And until you actually use a Topre for enough time to come to a reasoned opinion we will just laugh about how stupid you sound in your rants. Why because even those that don't like Topre boards but have tried them will admit that the Topre boards are a nice high quality board and are rather nice if that is what you like. Most all of us that like the Topre will admit that it is not for everyone and I have advised some to not get one because they have sounded like the type that would not like it (Generally but not the rule those that like heavy switches don't really like the Topre but then again some do).

That's why most prefer clicky and strongly tactile switches.  It's an immediate WOW effect.

[it needs time to really appreciate Topre and brown MX]

I'm of the same opinion.  Radical changes need time to get used to.  Nevertheless it sounds funny when you talk about "achieving [the higher states of] oneness with cup rubber".

Yep.

Careful, or I'll come and wear out all your rubber domes!

I don't need to fall into the Topre trap and spend several hundreds of dollars to realize that the "tactility" is basically that of a hq rubber dome.  And I don't need to have used one to realize that charging five times as much as for a mechanical board for a mere rubber dome is just a shameless ripoff.

Your turn.

So why didn't Unicomp steal the 5576 mini molds?

Because Lexmark made the C01 for IBM Japan. I think it was probably to do with Lexmark owning the right to make Trackpoint keyboards or something like that.

Have you seen the fold out stand on the C01?

Actually, it seems to me like a lot of people start off on things like Buckling Springs/Alps etc and then move on to stuff like Cherry Browns and Topres because of the lower force requirements and decreased noise.

No wai! Do they wear out like those old Dell ATs and Model Ms I've used on various occasions?

I know what to do rdjack21, I won this challenge a while back, but it will make lal sad ;)

This is not a challenge it is a waste of time and why would I care if lal is a closed minded jerk at least where Topre are concerned if he hadn't contributed some decent information on BS boards I would ignore him well actually I do that any ways. Really the only time I wast my time responding to him is when he is bashing new users.

On another note I thought you were using a different broker for getting boards off Yahoo Japan? I noticed that you used Crescent to get the Space saver and num pad.

If he is anything like me he is still buying boards to ship with it :)

I've got another CS NEO, Filco 89J, Filco FKB91UJ and a couple of Sun to USB converters sitting in Japan waiting for a couple more boards before I actually ship them. I really want to get a 106U for the parts for a mod I have in mind and maybe a 91U and of course anything else that may show up. But I figure I will ship mine in a few weeks or so.

I had the opposite situation to you - I tossed out a Sparcstation 5 partially because I had no decent keyboard for it. I do have an original Mouse Systems Sun mouse, the kind that needed a special mousemat.

The only reason I have the Sun -> USB converters is for the Sun Short Type Topre keyboard I have. The darn things are hard to come by and when you do find them they are expensive. A few of them showed up on Yahoo Japan for a really good price so I grabed them that way I have a spare for the one I do have.

Man I would have hated to toss out a Sparcstation 5 those were decent machines.

Shame. Used Sun keyboards are $3 here in silicon valley.
I trolled Geekhack and all I got was an eponymous SPOS.

The other reason is that I don't particularly want it. There's then the counter argument in my head that it's a cool workstation, then the argument that I already have one (SGI Indy), then the argument that Solaris is a more usable system. Then there was the argument that I should clutter up my house with more oversized computer parts, and that won out.

Someday I'm going to regret it =P
