Will I miss NKRO?
« on: Mon, 18 January 2010, 17:51:28 »
I have settled on getting a FILCO with blue cherries.  I would like to spend < $120, but wonder if I will miss NKRO?

Basically I type on forums, excel, e-mail etc... I rarely game, maybe 2-3 times a year on single player... Wolfenstein or Quake.

I would just get the tenkeyless, which I would prefer, but my wife would miss the numpad.

Looking for advice... the NKRO doesn't seem like it would be worth the extra $25 to me.

I went with the Full size Filco tactile click without NKRO.  Excited to try my first mechanical switch board.

I researched for over a year and finally pulled the trigger.  Thanks for everyone's advice.

Cherry MX Blue is a good switch to start with in my opinion.

When it comes to gaming, you only need NKRO if you're the kinda dude that shuns the wasd layout. Basically, if  you're a wsad fan, and use modifiers like ctrl, alt, and shift for ducking, crouching, etc, you probably don't need NKRO.

If you prefer something like rfdg for movement, or you play operation flashpoint-type combat sims, racing sims, etc which have tons of commands that you need to use whilst running and such... NKRO can come in really handy.

I don't game much any more, but those are my thoughts.

Good thinking... that $25 will be better used as a deposit for the next input device you'll want to buy from hanging out here.

while people usually get NKRO for games, ripster is right... do you really think 'they' would make games requiring the use of an NKRO board?  it does help, and there are oversights unfortunately.  this is one thing the console guys have right... kind of...

It doesn't look like you really need N-key rollover.

Oh, and by the way, I did the N-key rollover test on my FK-9000 and found that the home row gets 8-key rollover and the other rows get 4. But that's nowhere near the 1377-key rollover my IBM gets.

I just got the NKRO version because I like the gold logo.  I did notice that the spacebar feels a little different than my older Filco.  It must be that revision that was done to correct the occasional squeaking.  The switches are starting to loosen up a little now.

The A, S, D, F, E, R and T keys are staring to get shiny already, too.

my hhkb is still unshiny, my filco(s) is/are too but from lack of use.  my touchpad, on the other hand, which i have rarely used but am restricted to now... IS SHINY!  might be in my head, but might be starting to interfere with function, too: sliding finger along it gets slowed down through the middle, making it even more difficult to use.  and my laptop keyboard is terrible.

I smell an opera bug, can you reproduce that in a proper browser?

I tend to rest my left hand on the keyboard, so that's one reason why those keys get shiny faster.

Trackpads can go ****ty pretty fast.  Trackpoint, FTW.  I have had thos plasticky-type mouse pads cause similar tracking problems as they go smooth after awhile, too.  Bottom line: plastic sucks for texture-sensitive applications.

I sensssssssssssssssssssssssssse an ID10T fault and malhumor buffer overrun, myself, but that might be due to the browser, too.

this really is a situation that deserves a buffing wheel on a dremel.  if the whole thing was the same, the problem (cosmetic and functional) might be solved.

I wonder if anyone has tried coating a trackpad in Teflon.  I think that would make them at least a little more tolerable/durable if it doesn't break the tracking functionality.
