Deck Legend Tactile vs Filco Blue
« on: Wed, 20 January 2010, 12:44:29 »
Hello,

Keyboard newbie here!

I am trying to purchase my first mechanical keyboard!  The only one I used was the old IBM ones and deep down inside me I always knew these rubber keyboards were no good.

I am stuck between a Deck Legend Tactile and Filco Majestouch Blue.  I do game but also I type a lot, and this is why I am trying to get the Cherry Blues vice Browns.

The question is, which keyboard will be a better one for me, especially since I am just starting to venture into this?  Deck Legend will obviously cost more, about $50 in fact, but I am willing to get either one.

Please help me!

Oh and I wonder when will the Filco Tenkeyless Otaku Browns and Blues be available in elitekeyboards.com?

You don't have to pay too much for a brown Cherry keyboard.

The Deck Legend Tactile has Cherry clears, while tactile like the browns, are quite a bit stiffer. I would go for the Filco in the switch you want. The browns are slightly lighter with no click, and the blues are a little stiffer and clicky (obviously). It just depends on how noisy you want to be.

Ah, I'm at work so can't open that link.  Will try it when I get home.

But I was leaning more towards the Blue, hence my dilemma between the Deck and the Filco.

Currently, Deck does not offer anything like a blue switch.  The sell clears and blacks; the blacks are linear.

Oh I didn't know that.

this says Blue so I assume that this was a Cherry Blue.

Well I don't think I will be going Cherry clears, as i have no idea how that is like, seeing that I am overwhelmed enough already.

This leaves me with Filco by default!

It's one of these. They're ugly, but they have [Edit: Black] Cherries and go for only 20USD each with free shipping.

[Edit: Go here for a brown cherry keyboard.]

Actually, the one in that pic has blacks.  The MX11800 has the browns (and a trackball).

If you don't know either switch and the click doesn't bother you too much when gaming, I'd rather recommend blues. Tactility in the browns is so very subtle that I don't find it very helpful when typing.

I love the filco blue.  Only drawback is the loudness of the switches.  Cherry g80-3000lscrc2 (on backorder) may potentially be better,  but the boards are backordered till april.

Watch out for the funny shaped enter key on those mx8100's.

I found that double-shot key caps changed the sound of my Scorpius M10 Cherry blues from the original thick plastic single shot.
  • Thick double-shot caps raised the pitch significantly
  • Thin double-shot caps lowered the pitch significantly.
I wonder if this is due to some filtering/absorbtion characteristics of the plastic thickness.

probably because of the weight of the keys...
i think it is also the reason why model Ms preduce the 'thock' sound due to their thickness

i say , go for filco blues .... unless you really want that backlighting

I'm with ripster on this one.  I put a few Cherry caps on my Filco, and the pitch was lower.  It was more of a "thock" and less of a "tap."

Could also be key material that is making the sound difference more than thickness in this case.

I just got a Deck Legend with tactile switches. I don't really like the switches, they lean more to the black side than to the brown side IMHO. A little too stiff for my taste, but maybe it just takes some getting used to. So I think the OP made the right choice going for a Filco w/blues.

OK i just got my Filco Blue.

My fingers are having a..... fingasm right now... I don't ever want to stop typing.  My coworker is right now asking me "what the hell is clicking so much"

Anyway,

I got a red esc and the blue WASD keys.  I just replaced them but the WASD keys seem a little more "raised" compared to the other keys.  Is there a "proper" way of pulling and putting these keys?

Thanks.

Congrats.  I know that find-any-reason-you-can-to-type feeling.  I haven't really felt it in awhile, though, since I have been using Cherry browns for so long.  I want to try a Topre at some point to complete the cycle of the more common quality switches.  I definitely want to try someone else's 'board first, though, before I spend that kind of money.

Hello,

cheers for the follow-up,

I don't think I can fix it, for some reason... It is still a little raised,
i actually "slide" a straight edge from the left edge of the key (i.e. from Q->W) then from right side of the key (i.e. F->D) and the straight edge actually gets "stuck" or hits the blue keys, indicating they are raised a little...

My fingers are starting to ignore the fact that they're a little raised, getting used to them more now.

Oh and for some reason the 'W' key was actually stuck for a while.  For example, when i press the 'W' key it would click then not return to its ground state.  I would have to either bang on it with my finger or grab it and force it to pop back out.
I took out the key and reseated it, that seems to have fixed the problem.

I don't remember if it cost more, but sending it back to the US after I already paid customs and stuff only for wrong color would certainly be more hassle.

I also recieved a Deck Legend Ice (tactile) a couple of weeks ago. I sent it back, lucky for me that I live across Lake Michigan from them. The Keyboard was ok, but I did not like the feel of the Cherry clear switches...they felt...loose. I had seen many pictures of them but sitting side by side with my Model M I was surprised by how old fashioned the case looked. I am sure it is a good keyboard, but for 189.99 USD I think I will keep looking. I really wanted a backlit keyboard otherwise I too would have opted for a Filco.

This.  The Deck Legend is just hideous.  For nearly $200, I would hope to get something that had the looks of a Filco.  At the very least, they could get rid of that horrible font.

I like some of the Deck keycaps.  I'm gonna crack open a Filco and light up my Esc key someday.

lol, my wife looked at me like I was a dork when I showed her the skull and cross-bones ESC keycap that came with the Deck. If I showed her that one I think she would have me committed! :D

Maybe this doesn't go here, but I found an interesting post on the Deck forums a while ago. (link)

"Currently we will be using the Cherry MX1A-C1NW switches (white plunger, soft tactile, 2.1 oz force). We may switch to a MX1A-G1NW (brown, 1.8 oz force) in the future because I have heard the C1NWs are going away. Depending on sales of the current tactile lineup and demand for a blue "clicky" switch version we may release that option in the future as well."

The main reason they aren't using browns right now is noise.

True, and even if the cherry clears did go away, there would still be enough left to keep producing Decks for a while.
