Hello from Germany
« on: Fri, 18 November 2016, 14:19:31 »
Hi,

I'm Kilonzi from Germany. I'm in love with mechanical keyboards since 20 years. But I was more like a user. I knew that Cherry switches are good. So I got keyboards with them in it. But that was almost it. So no deep knowledge regarding the topic until now.

I'm working as an "IT System Engineer". I do a lot of Unix shell and PowerShell scripting at work. And I try to avoid using my mouse as much as possible.

Currently I own an old "Das Keyboard III" with Cherry MX brown switches and a "Filco Majestouch Minila Air" with Cherry MX red switches. They both have German ISO layouts.

It is strange that in all those years it didn't come to my mind to switch to a US ANSI layout. Especially since I'm coding a lot. And the characters I type alot while scripting are a pain to reach on a German keyboard layout. Now that I made the decision to switch to an ANSI layout, I started reading a lot here. I'm ready to go all-in! Not only switching the keyboard layout but I will be ordering a "HHKB Pro 2 Type-S" via a proxy in Japan.

Every other keyboard would be a compromise. I would always want that sweet little thing. I'm sure that I will love it!

Cheers
Kilonzi

Welcome and cheers from a fellow German.

You made the right point: German layout sucks for coding! I've been using US/UK layouts for a long while now, but only recently fell for mechanical keyboards.

@Kilonzi: Welcome to GH! I am American, but with some ancestral roots in Germany. Many years ago, I spent a delightful vacation in Bavaria.

My least-favorite switches are Cherry mx. My favorites are IBM capacitive buckling spring (Model F), Topre 45g and 55g, and Alps (SKCM blue or white).

My favorite form factor is 60%, but I use TKL and full-size keyboards as well. I don't like the ones in the twilight zone between 60% and TKL.

My favorite layout is HHKB Pro 2. When I am not actually using my silenced and lubed HHKB Pro 2, I still use this layout on other keyboards as much as possible by remapping them to the HHKB Pro 2 configuration.

Enjoy your time in this forum!
