This is just an idea at the moment. All of the art/icons was ripped from internet. (No copyright infringement indented!)

Inspiration:

Possible options:
154640-1

154642-2

154644-3

Possible novelties:

The spacebar stands out too much. I also suggest you make your own icons.

It can work very well, but being optional would be best I think.

I'm personally not a fan of the colors, but I understand their usage.

Personally, I'd suggest trying...

White Alphas, Blue Legends

Yellow Mods, Black Legends

...OR...

Yellow Alphas, Blue Legends

Grey Mods, White Legends?

I would suggest trying to color match some of the already created Fallout novelty caps and work backwards from there. I'm not a huge lover a the current color schemes.

Isn't this a duplicate of The Blue Jumpsuit?

No, unless it will switch away from DSA/SA-R3 to a sculptured set. Also that one is more Fallout 3/4 inspired, this one is strictly Fallout 1/2 inspired. Though there is naturally a big overlap!

I would suggest trying to color match some of the already created Fallout novelty caps and work backwards from there. I'm not a huge lover a the current color schemes.

That would make sense.

I'm personally not a fan of the colors, but I understand their usage.

I get what you are saying. Maybe it doesn't have to be precise reproduction of the key palette.
It should be appealing to not just Fallout fans.

It can work very well, but being optional would be best I think.

Yes, it would be optional.

The spacebar stands out too much. I also suggest you make your own icons.

I just wanted to see whether there is any interest before investing any time into proper icons. They would be easy/doable to redraw in a custom way. I would probably need vectors for manufacturer anyway...

I like the third variant with green alphas. It's different.
