IBM 5576-001, 002, 003 in one Auction
« on: Mon, 08 February 2010, 08:35:13 »
Up for Auction on Yahoo Japan we have all three IBM Mechanical keyboards all at once. Starting at 6,000 yen 6 days to go. webwit got the last 5576-003 that showed up then added an 002 and maybe a 001 to his order. Don't let webwit be the only one with a full set of the Japanese IBM mechanical keyboards.

Keyboards
Topre Capacitive: Realforce 87U, Realforce 86U, HHKB Pro 2, Topre MD01B0, Topre HE0100, Sun Short Type, OEM NEO CS (x2), NISSHO Electronics KB106DE
Buckling Spring: IBM Model M Space Saver (1291472), Unicomp Customizer x 2
Cherry Brown: Filco FKBN87M/EB, Compaq MX11800
Black Alps: ABS M1
Not so great boards Rare Spring over dome OKI, Sun rack keyboard

Trackballs - Trackman Wheel (3), Trackman marble (2)
Keyboards I still want to get - Happy Hacking Keyboard Pro 2 the White version, Realforce 23U number pad in black and maybe white, μTRON ergo board with Topre switches.
Previously owned - SiiG MiniTouch (White Alps), Scorpius M10 (Blue Cherry), IBM Model M13

Maybe that'll be the next auction.

I might need to break out a Model M for a little while tonight for old times' sake.

Yes and No respectively.

Note that two out of the three are Alps leaf-spring switches.

I' m gonna sleep on it.

I've already picked up enough crap (stuff that's rather difficult to get elsewhere) in Japan that I'm going to have to send a portion by boat. So bringing it back to Canada isn't so bad.

At least get yourself an A01. They seem to be relatively common.

Obviously these keyboards are uncommon to find in North America, but are they particularly rare in their "native environment"?

Seems to me that if they're a common keyboard over there then there should be no rarity value added when importing...just the cost of importing plus a sane price (something which 1000 USD is certainly not).

The 5576-003 is worth a good chunk of money by itself. $1,000 is a bit too high an estimation, but it's not really that far off.

I remember seeing a NIB 5576-A01 for about $90 on Yahoo Japan. Then I realized that I missed a zero... it was actually $900.

Wow...impressive.

Anyone know what sort of systems they shipped with? I imagine something fairly low-volume in order to be rare enough to command a price like that.

D'oh, I remember reading that now (might have been Sandy's pages actually, the IBM wiki may not have existed yet, or if it did was still very much empty).

Thanks

I wonder what the rationale behind that keyboard layout was, and why so many of them ended up in Japan...

I'm really surprised this item only has 7 hours left and has only had a few bids. It is currently sitting at 7,750 yen which is a really good price for all three of them. If I had not just bid on some more Topre boards I would throw a bid at this and see if I could get them.

Also a 03 was just listed with out the num pad for cheap I'm going to keep an eye on it to see where it goes. I may actually bid on that one.

Well the set sold for 15,500 Yen still not a bad price for all three of the boards.

Just because it has a bit more...uh...meaning...if I say it:

OMFG THAT'S AN AWESOME PRICE for three great condition relatively rare buckling spring keyboards!

Someone lucked out for sure.

(if Google doesn't lie, the lot of 3 went for 181 CAD)

Damn.

Great price for the -001 and -003. Sell the -002 on eBay as a 'hacker-style keyboard' to some weeaboo and you'd make back a healthy chunk of what you paid for the ones you wanted.

Why the -002? It's like the A01, except no Brother switches, and a layout that requires external drivers to be installed. The -001 on the other hand has that 'retro awesome' that I approve of.
