I hate country music.  I live in the wrong place for my music tastes.  My sympathy and condolences go to you and your family, coworkers, etc., trievalot.

It could be worse... you could be in Nashville... though Nashville's a cool city even if you don't like country music.

I consider her more pop than country, but that's just me...

And, yeah, she's a cute kid; but she's a kid.

If so, that's some Singstar kid singing an ABBA song they don't know. Haha!

I don't really care for the music too much, but I do like Willie.* When I was kid, we used to go through Nashville to visit family in Texas before we moved here. EVERY radio station was country (this was in the late '80s). I hated that part of the trip. Austin is much better.

It's funny. Around here, the people that listen to and like Willie are nothing like him whatsoever. The "country" people here (which is almost every white person in this area of the state other than Austin) tend to be very conservative. Willie... well, not so much.

I posted Norah and Willy because they mix the NYC/Nashville scene.

That's one reason why I like Willie.  He takes chances with music.  On NPR, they played a song of his where he sung about being a gay cowboy.  That song, since it is a serious song - not satire, would never get played, and it would probably mean career suicide, at least here in TX.  Country music is some of the most formulaic garbage next to current hip-hop.  The country music record-making model is what destroyed commercial music.  Long before the current world of commercial music, country had already started the formula of "create an album of crap with one or two hit songs we can on the radio over, and over, and over..."  On top of all of that, I don't identify with, nor approve of (in some cases), of the subject matter in the music and the culture it represents.

Many people say the same about hip-hop, and that's fine by me; to each their own.  I have pretty much all-but-abandoned the community myself.

College Dropout is a great album* Kanye's stuff before that was good, too. Each successive album, though, he sinks deeper into his own glory and loses touch with what made the first album so good: accessability. Music can evolve, that's great and necessary, but Kanye fell off the deep end some time ago.

*The best debut hip-hop album of all time is Nas' Illmatic - his debut. It came out in 1994 when lyricism and beat-making were at their pinnacle. The meeting of the two culminated in Illmatic. Never before and never again will there be an album this good. Not even Nas, himself, has even come close. The current landscape of beat-making, culture, and art will not allow this to happen. College Dropout is pretty close, but it's still not Illmatic.

The willie nelson gay cowboy song you reference *is* satire. I've heard it live (its been around since long before brokeback mtn) and it was the most tongue in cheek song of the show.  As for kanye...  I typically disagree with Obama, but he's right, that guy(kanye) *is* a jackass.

i wouldnt say taylor swift is any more country than ACDC any more. just like those before her (Leanne Rimes, Hannah, Shania) she has gone mainstream and leaves a banjo on stage to justify being country.

Sorry. Couldn't even make it to the 1 minute mark on that one. I'd rather go clean a used keyboard.

Only on geekhack would someone start a thread saying they'd rather play with a remote keyboard than a proximate 19-year old woman.
