HHKB Type S vs Purple Sliders
« on: Tue, 04 April 2017, 18:16:38 »
Hi,

I've heard that the sliders from the Type S have the same length as the Purple. Can someone confirm that ?  ;D

I don't believe they do. If I remember correctly, the type s has a travel distance of 3.8mm while silenced realforces maintain the 4mm. So I believe that the type s sliders are the same as the regular topre slider but with the added foam.

I think there have been posts showing them with longer sliders as well...

I have both the regular sliders and the type s sliders, and I can confirm that the type s sliders are longer. This is even more evident if you install them on the same keyboard - I had the misfortune of doing so and immediately realized that my 'a' key is shorter than its neighboring keys.

I should measure both the purple sliders and the type-s sliders one day though, will need to take them apart again to do so...

The type-s having longer sliders? or the purple sliders being longer? This post from hypersphere says that they are not. The purple sliders are longer as stated in the post, so you are correct if that is what you meant. https://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=86117.msg2312632#msg2312632

This was already discussed and the Type S sliders are proven to be longer.

They are..the purple sliders are on a RF...the HHKB Type-S, at least in many versions of it, use a similar longer slider that is black.

Right. So I thought the purple sliders on a Realforce were longer.

Oh wow guess the type s sliders are longer. Now we need to get all 3 in one picture.

I have sourced all the sliders and will have an album in a week or so. Hopefully.

Any chance we can get an update on this? And if possible, could you post a comparison of the HHKB Type-S slider vs. the Realforce purple slider with both of them having their rings on? I (and I imagine many others) would greatly appreciate it.

Also, does anyone know if they've done anything about the stabilized keys on the HHKB Type-S (LShift, Enter)? The silenced Realforces use a different housing, slider, and a thicker-than-standard foam ring to achieve uniform travel distance, but afaik PFU has never attempted to replicate that in the Type-S.

I've read in another thread that older Type-S boards had the exact same sliders and normal HHKB's. Type-S has longer sliders now though. It also appears from Hypersphere's photo that the horizontal base of the slider is also thinner, which helps correct key travel as well.

I've got an HHKB Type-S that was manufactured in January of this year, and it's key travel is noticeably less than my purple slider RealForce 104U. So for full key travel with a stock silenced board, purple sliders are a must. If there is a special black type-s slider, I don't know why it wasn't made to provide the full 4.0 mm stroke. Why else would they bother making a different version if not for keeping the standard 4.0 mm stroke?

The Realforce could be a combo of slider AND plate to accommodate for the loss in travel though. I guess there is only one way to find out.

Any update on this? I'd really like to see a comparison of the different versions of the Type-S sliders, since it seems like a change was implemented at some point.

I've tried both of these sliders and personally didn't find that drastic of a difference to be honest. The purple sliders do have a nice aesthetic which I enjoy though.
