Mah Filco Majestouch 2 with Silent Reds gonna arrive tomorrow...
I got myself a genuine FILCO too yay. Ninja model, black, Cherry MX black.
For our reference, the 104 front-printed caps weigh
112g (grams). The kitchen scale was jumping between 113 and 112, which means that the weight is ~112.5g, minus the ~1g for the plastic bag, and we're getting 112g, rounded up! Everybody with FILCO caps please feel free to measure weight too.
The thickness of these caps are 0.87mm or 0.93mm or 0.90mm, i often get these same readings when checking several caps, the spacebar, etc. So i am assuming that the nominal thickness of the caps
is 0.90mm. Also, as with most plastic material, the black keycap surface is easily scratched, for example with a finger nail, which leaves a darker/shinier mark on the black "textured" finish. Maybe even worse, when i look through the keycap out of my window, i can see that the material is
less dark-transparent, i.e. it is even thinner (argh!), at the 'bottom of the MX stem holder' (if you know what i mean). And that 'bottom', on the opposite side, is exactly where we place our fingers, namely in the middle of each cap! In other words, the keycap is the thinnest (=much less than 0.90mm!) in the center of each keycap, i.e. exactly where the switch stem is located omfg. What can i say? So far i am not impressed with my genuine FILCO.
As you can see, the rest of the board including the stabilizers plus the white thingies weighs
1098g. For a total weight of
1210g. Again, not impressed. For comparison purposes, my (white) FILCO knockoff weighs 1266g total and has 1.15mm thick keycaps, full RGB, PBT double shot backlit and cost only 70bucks shipped. With some luck i should receive my new blue-white keycap set, supposedly 1.4mm thick, also PBT double shot backlit, next week. The tracking of my AX shipment looks promising.
While i am proud of owning a famous brand keyboard, i also feel that the product could and should offer more for the price. Afaik FILCO prices are only that high because the company is Japanese, and Japanese wages/salaries plus import/export procedures plus cost of middlemen/distributors artificially augment the price for the end consumer in the West. The retail box says "MADE IN TAIWAN", but since Taiwan are 100% Chinese, the product was made in a Chinese factory etc and imho one should not think of it as being higher quality as we like to think of genuine Japanese products (Casio, Seiko, Japanese pens, Japanese swords/knives/blades, Toyota) or Korean products (Leopold, Samsung).
I will weigh my white stock caps and weigh&measure the new blue-white caps as soon as i get the latter set in, probably within 1 week. My pleasure my contribution.
