Steelseries with replacement keys
« on: Mon, 01 March 2010, 01:17:14 »
Hi guys,

I don't know if I'm in the right forum section but I have a quick question..

I currently have a Steelseries 7G keyboard and was wondering if I could buy a replacement key for WASD since I use this all the time (FPS).

A very friendly dude Brian from Elitekeyboards told me to come here and ask.

The keys I'm interested in buying is http://elitekeyboards.com/products.php?sub=access,keycaps&pid=omkbkt and maybe http://elitekeyboards.com/products.php?sub=access,keycaps&pid=zero_redesc (Why not right? ;))

My question would be, will the height of my existing keys and the replacement keys will be the same?  Brian already told me that it will fit snuggly in my Steelseries but he's not sure about the height.  Can someone shed some light?

Edit: What's the difference between Happy Hacking and the Filco keys?  Cause I'm digging the no print key caps.

Cheers!

hhkb keycaps wont fit into filco ones because of the switches
the keycaps in filco and hhkb are optimized for typing..not sure of that in 7G ...but you can take pictures of in from the sides so that we can compare it to filco keycaps height

The red Esc keys will not work for sure, because they are intended for the Zero line of Filcos which use ALPS-compatible switches.  You can buy blank Cherry caps from Elitekeyboards, too.  If you get the blank cap set from Elite, the WSAD keys will be the same height for sure.  I don't know, however, if the some of the larger caps from the blank set will fit on the Steelseries (keys like Alt, Shift, etc.); the letters will be fine, though.

Should work.
I don't have the lavender WASD caps, but I do have a 7G and a Filco. The normal keycaps of both have the same size, height and angle and are interchangable.
Typing on blues.

Thank you for explaining, makes sense now.  I've ordered one now just to try it out. Haha, if there's any other colour out there other than lavender I'd take it but this is the only thing I can find right now.

Maybe I'll buy the blank ones later on for the numbers and such. :D

I thought I remember seeing some orange ones somewhere, but I don't recall where I saw it.  You might want to do a quick search of the forum if you're interested.

Will make you a girly man though.  Those lavendar interchangeable keys.

Might be a good thing in FPS games though. Will give kills some friendly personal touch.

You might want to ask majestouch from elitekeyboards if he'll order them for you. You might have to wait a little while for it, but you won't have to go the broker route.

Ordering four keycaps through a broker is proof of true dedication though. ;)

True.  I am not so dedicated.  Unless I can buy it myself, I am not going that far out of my way to get something.

Yup, confirmation that the lavender WASD and red ESC work perfectly on the SS7G.

Haha! That looks awesome man, thank you very much!

I didn't order the red one though.. damn if I only I knew..  I ordered the lavender ones but also trying to get hold of Brian about the orange Keycaps if he can't get them I might have to ask someone from Korea to order it for me.

But I really appreciate the photos it looks sick!

Orange keycaps on Leopold are sold out since months, apparently currently they do not have plans to restock them. I think IOMania still has some in stock, but they do not ship outside of Korea either.

That's gay!  Brian told me he will order some but no ETA though, but different colours to choose from!  Guess I'll wait.
