Help me decide!
« on: Fri, 30 June 2017, 07:40:01 »
Good morning GH (depending on where you are I suppose)! I am trying to get a nice mechanical for work, and have come up with a few ideas.

But first, here is a major, almost shameful caveat.... I cannot bring one of my beloved Model Fs to work. Shameful, I know. They're simply too loud.

So, my ideas are the following: The Filco Majestouch-2 (104) in quiet browns. My other idea is to get a Unicomp Model M and silence it. It will be cheaper but I don't know how quiet it will be, as well as an iffy build quality...

Apparently the Filcos are awesome, but I really don't know much about the Cherry MX switch in general. The price really matters not, as I am a contractor and can expense it, as it will solely be a keyboard for work.

If anyone has any more ideas/suggestions/critiques, please let me know!

Thanks.

Dan.

Well, I think that Cherry Switches are great! If you want silent switches get the reds or the browns. Browns have a tactile bump, so when you press it, you feel exactly when it's actuating. Reds are a little more silent and don't have that tactile feedback. IMO get the Filco and put some o-rings or zealincios in between the keycaps and the switches if you need that extra silence.

Thank you for your input. I don't think I'll need that extra silence. I work for a Land Broker in DFW. Our office is pretty open and somewhat loud at times so it shouldn't be a big deal.

How about a Leopold? They have the same build, material and finish quality as Filcos, but with stock keycaps that are way way better. You have also several form factors to choose from. I have a FC980M with blacks and it's amazing. The keystrokes are so nice, smooth, and not very noisy, and actually very pleasant to hear. The thick PBT keycaps really make a difference in how they feel and sound. The front legends put me off at first but now I consider them as a blessing because they have forced me to learn to touch type, which is a wonderful ability.

I actually ended up buying a full-size Leopold FC900R with browns. Looking forward to it!

Silenced Topre maybe? Browns are not very quiet if you hammer them hard. Most people I've seen typing on them, do hammer them because of their low activation force and almost non existent tactile bump. I mean that bump is ok only when you learn how to type on them lightly, which is not easy at first, especially coming from BS.

I've heard good things about Leopold.

I have a CODE with MX clears on standby, which I switch out with my SSK at work occasionally for a bit of variety.
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

Yeah Leopold looks good, but I never got any of their keyboards because they have FN key in wrong spot. I really need 2 Alts and 2 Cmd keys next to my space bar.
It's very intriguing though with Cherry profile and PBT or Double Shot keycaps at that price, with black and white colour schemes, only that FN... Like a Chinese knock of keyboard or an Uniqey.
