1996 Model M pinout (PCB)

Hi,

can someone help me figure out the pinout for that 4-pin connector? I threw away the cable and I'd like to attach a new one :)

What part number? Is it a 42H?

If it's a 42H, then it will be the same pinout as Unicomp's controllers. If it's a 52G or related, then it's the same as older Model Ms.

Well I don't have a pinout for the controller so CLK/DATA are fifty-fifty...

Here's what I gather:
- CLK/DATA
- DATA/CLK
- GND
- +5V

Yesterday I managed to desolder the connector and while trying to remove excess solder I managed to overheat two pads (for GND and +5) which ofcourse promptly deached from the PCB... luckily there are two more I can use, if I manage not to screw them up too...

Trace the burnt pads back to the next component. Solder your wire there. Add glue to keep it in place when finished.

Will do! I just figured out I needed some better tools like:
- a proper wire stripper
- a "helping hands" soldering stand
- flux
- and finally some desoldering braid

After I get everything, I'm ready to fly!!! :)

Again, what part number is it? What you need to do can vary between the keyboard you're working on.

Mine is Grenock, UK made 42H.

near control PCB
- DATA    
- CLK    
- GND  
- +5V
bottom of a PCB

Through my experience I may say that cross wiring of DATA and CLK lines may not cause fatal damage to your KB or PC as far as you connect +5V and GND lines properly.

HAY GUYZ.

The ground is easily identifiable.  It forms the 'ground plane' on the pcb.  Find continuity to a screw hole or the ground plane.  That is your ground.

+5 should have some caps between it and ground near the connector.

There are a couple polarized components - ie they have to be pointing the right way wrt +5 or ground - the big capacitor and the LEDs.  

Once you find these two you can mix and match the data/clk without killing anything.  So if luck gets you the wrong way to begin with the first time you know the other way is right.

Yeah, a 139- number would be it. But I'm not familar with that part number. What sort of cable does it have? Is it...

A) A detachable SDL cable.
B) A permanently attached coiled cable.
C) A permanently attached straight cable.

Not necessarily. Not all keyboards made from 96 onwards were 42Hs. There were still a number of SDL cable Model Ms made as late as 97 or 98. Mainly Industrial ones like the 1394950.

Well, I successfully destroyed the other two pads. I'm not sure whether it's my soldering skillz or the PCB quality is just ****e... anyhow, I'm done fixing this for now as I can't figure out where to solder the GND wire :)
