HHKB and Filco Tenkeyless KB & Monitor Stands
« on: Tue, 16 March 2010, 16:11:22 »
I have two friends who want to help me make this monitor stand and keyboard shelf/palm rest.  They have every tool imaginable in their 50k+ sq. ft. shop.

They want to make one for a tenkeyless filco, and one for a HHKB Pro.  I'm about 3 hours away from my keyboards right now and I'm hoping we can get to making the cuts tonight. Can anyone help me with some simple dimensions of the boards?

I need the slope of the top of the HHKB and the Filco Tenkeyless, so that way we can make the slope of the palm rest match.   Can someone measure the height of the case from the desk, to the top of the case (height not including keycaps).  I would need both the height of the front, and rear of the case from the desk's surface.

Thanks in advance.

I've attached an image from KBDMania that we're trying to remake.

I'll see if I can dig up the specs on the HHKB.  If you make them, I will buy an HHKB model.  I live in SA, so I am nearby to pick it up or whatever.  If you really get your **** together quickly, I will be in Austin next week for a school competition for my GF (and some disc golf for me).

No pressure, or anything, but I want one.   Now.

For the palm rest, you might want to reference the sizes give at the EliteKeyboards site for the:

Here are the specs for the HHKB (not sure about the slope, though): 11.6 x 4.3 x 1.6in. The front edge is 3/4" high. I like the pic from KBDMania, but I would prefer a flat wrist rest and not a sloped one as I find them unconfortable.

Thanks a ton guys.  I have the info available from elitekeyboards, but the 3/4 th inch on the front is great.  Is that exactly 3/4ths? Also, what would the rear be, without measuring the keycaps. I imagine the 1.6" listed on EK is with the keycaps.

Then, if anyone has those same measurements, but on a Filco Tenkeyless board, I would appreciate that very much so.

Itlnstln, the guy building these and I played over 50 baskets this last week here in Huntsville.  I haven't been playing long, but I'm able to hit par now on the little course we play most often.

Thanks

The front edge looks exactly 3/4".  I have a wrist rest that I know is exactly 3/4" (I measured it before for something else), and the top of the front edge is the same height as the rest.  I don't have a ruler handy at the moment, so I don't know what the back edge is.

I have heard the Huntsville course is pretty good.  I am going to play Circle C next week.  I am also looking forward to playing Circle R again now that John Houck has opened it back up to the public.

Circle C is fun, I went out and played once when I was just getting started.

Ripster.... you reminded me, I'm such a dope, I would also need the keyboards depth for getting the slope perfect, or close to perfect.  You have the tools and the board and a nice picture, though.. at that angle, I'm just not able to see those exact measurements.  Any help?  Metric is fine!

Here's two KB tray/palmrest w/ monitor stands that we've completed.  One for the HHKB and another for the Filco tenkeyless.

Sorry, it's late and I just arrived at my friends place to pick these up, wanted to let you guys see how it went. I'm going to ramble real quick about them, but yeah.. here...

These are both going home with me this weekend and are our prototypes.
My friend Joe is looking to make more if people are interested.  We're looking into making them with various types of wood. These were made with Poplar, stained and then lacquered.

Dimensions
We gave the tray 3/16ths of an inch clearance on each side to allow wiggle room when sliding the tray in/out.  The tray is also 1/16" wider than the board on each side to avoid the keyboard from rubbing against the inner wall of the monitor stand.  The boards should clear w/ board covers sold on EK.  The slope of the palm-rest isn't too far from level and sits just below the front lip of the kb.  The palm-rest is 3 & 3/4" deep on both models.

We also made some palm-rests w/o the tray or monitor stand. I know both of mine do not feature handles underneath the tray, but I told him to keep mine w/o as I'm going to use the sides to pull it out.  I'm going to have pegs put inside the monitor stand that can act as a bump stop to prevent the tray from being pushed in farther than flush.

Again, these are the first two that we made w/o ever having a board to compare. We went solely off of measurements from websites and your help.  I think they turned out well and I'm anxious to get them home and setup shop.

Now that we have the boards, we may make a few adjustments and would like feedback from you guys.  He's interested in making some to sale anyone is interested.

Here's the pics.. http://www.flickr.com/photos/chuckading/4466597214/in/photostream/

Let me know what you guys think...

I think I'd go for a set for the HHKB.  Not sure how much I'd use it, but I think it looks pretty cool.  ;)

They do look good. The unstained pale wood with the white HHKB makes an especially good match.

Here's an idea. What if the rest area (or part of it) could flip up 90° to close the 'box' when you slide the keyboard away? If it flipped up towards the back that would also enable the whole thing to be made with much less depth. That might be an over engineered design, but it could be useful. Just something that popped into my head, anyway, the way you built yours is just fine.

I want one of the palm rests for the HHKB.  I don't think I would use a monitor stand as I like them low.  Good work.

Now that I think about it, I would like the stand, too.  I like the slope of the wrist rest as well.  The rounded edges of the stand-alone wrist rest really gives it a "finished" look.  Incorporate that into the entire design, and you have a winner.  I am in Austin this weekend, so if you have something to sell, I am here. :)

My GF and I will be at Cricle C tomorrow morning.  We'll be hitting Disc Nation a little later this afternoon.  Stellar work.  I wish Lam47 was around to see this; I think he would be impressed.  He was going to start a project like this, but health problems caused him to put those on hold.

Thanks itlnstln, we plan on making the edges rounded as similar to the keyboards casing as possible. Again, those two were just prototypes / practice run. There wont be any available by this weekend as I'm here in Huntsville to pick these up and hit up some disc golf.

When I get back to my computer I'll post up some details about individual orders, but I'm glad to see some are interested.  Well probably give it some time, get the number of palmrest & trays to make, then make them at once. Then from there we'll ship / exchange.

Also, I agree about liking monitors low. I actually plan to use this with my MacBook. I think these are killer for gaining the space I lose from not using the laptops keyboard. So think of these as a monitor or laptop stand. Fits most 13 - 15 laptops! This weekend I have a netbook on the filco stand, it looks a little silly. They are also Vista and Windows 7 compatible, both 32 and 64 bit.

That's the HHKB lite.  Not the same switch as the HHKB Pro2 - it's a standard rubber dome.

Compared with the fancy capacitive rubber dome of the HHKB Pro2 which uh, is much more refined ;)

I played disc golf with chuckading (really cool guy, BTW) this weekend, and he said that progress on the monitor stand/keyboard trays is going well, and there have been some marked improvements in the design.  He also said he would be posting pics soon.

Thanks itlnstln and others for reminding me to post pics of these.  I'm uploading 13 pictures to flickr right now of the two different sets I have.  I took a couple pictures showing where I applied felt to keep the kb from rubbing against wood, and to keep the wood tray from scratching a desktop.  My current desk is really small and barely holds both, but you'll get an idea what these stands and trays are like.

http://www.flickr.com/photos/chuckading/

We have added the grips/handles to the front of the tray similar to Woodworks' (From KBmania.net) originals.

It's late and I should rest for tomorrows lesson on operations with integers.
