windows 7 doesn't like my model m

has anyone had any trouble with win7 and a model m .... I have 2 the newer 97 model 42h has no issues but on start up the 89 model will stop before windows loads & go into the boot manager & I have to click for it to start up win 7 (it doesn't do this if I click num-lock during start up) I turned off start with num-lock in the bios but it didn't help .... also after I click to start win7, it starts up fine but if I open any program that has (computer ) drop down menu at the top of the window it will be flashing until i click num-lock again
the keyboard works perfectly on my win xp machine

I've had zero issues with Model Ms and Windows 7. To me, it sounds like you've a dodgy PS/2 connector on your motherboard that's sensitive to the 42H' for whatever reason. Buying a 'Blue Cube' USB adapter and using that should resolve the problem.

I have a lil unicomp model m that uses the same type cord I have no issues with it, no matter which cord I use...I can use either cord with the unicomp with no problems & have the same problems with the 89 model m using either cord...the 97 model m works perfectly

ok I tried it on another win7 pc I have & it works perfectly on it so I'm going to chock it up to the other pc is not compatible for some reason.... any ideas???

If it works fine on another computer with the same OS, that makes it even more likely that it's a problem with the motherboard's PS/2 port.

Because of the nature of these things, they can often work for one keyboard and then randomly **** themselves on another. A blue cube adapter is only about $5-10 and should sort you out.

You appear to misunderstand. It's  not the cable he's suggesting you change. He's suggesting you get a specific PS/2-to-USB adapter that is known to work on all Model M with all motherboards ever tested by a geekhacker. No geekhacker has ever failed to get a model M working on a USB connection with the Blue Cube.

Only one keyboard will not work with the Blue Cube, and we dare not speak it's name out loud for the fear it inspires in us...

Having used 2 M's and an M13 on Win7, none of them are problematic. They are '89, and '90 for the M's and '96 for the M13. Get the cube, it will likely eliminate problems even in software, as you will then be using USB HID rather than PS/2, and whatever is interfering will likely not have a problem with both drivers.

I'm using my model M (86) and it works perfectly fine on windows 7 (64-bit) with PS/2.

Biggest problem is probably going to be electrical current supply. PS/2 by design provides 200-something mA of current and modern motherboards won't reliably supply that upper limit...intentionally by design or otherwise, a lot just won't do it properly.

When the keyboard isn't getting enough juice, it will either function erratically, function properly but intermittently, or perhaps not at all.

So yeah, try a Blue Cube - or any USB adapter for that matter - and if the problems seem to be gone then it's likely a hardware level problem that can't easily be resolved.

Have you tried uninstalling the keyboard from the device manager and then doing scan for hardware changes and reinstall it.
