Ebay 'oops!'=RS6000; What did I just buy?
« on: Thu, 01 April 2010, 16:41:30 »
Hi all-

Was referred here from OCN whilst investigating what to get for mech keyboard, but although I solved that problem (42H1292 - second lowest going price in 2 weeks for model Ms - YAY!:bounce:) I got a side effect along with it.

When searching through listings, apparently I or my cat (who likes to park on my kb if I don't pay attention to him), put in a snipe bid on an item that I looked at but ultimately didn't want to buy (I suppose its also possible that this ebay desktop mibay snipe thing screwed up as well, but how will I ever know? )  I've just been informed that  in the final moments I sniped it for a whole $3.25 new...and I have no idea what it is at all.

For that going price, I figure this can't be good, but it just maybe it might not be HORRIBLE?  If it is I might contact the seller and explain the mishap, but I'd just as soon keep it at that price (plus shipping = total: @$16) for a spare or whatever, and not risk damaging my ebay rep.

They listed it as a new rs6000 but as far as what I've seen that is a model of computer not a keyboard, or perhaps it is one that came with that model?  Somewhat difficult to locate any info on this, and the seller wasn't much help when the listing was active (when I first inquired about what type of switches it had, I got 3 words back: "I don't know"  but at least his reply was prompt.)

here's the listing:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=300411435840&ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT

Opinions? it preferable to take the board or an unpaid item strike on this?  (if the guy wants to be difficult)

You need this

Ultimately you are responsible for what your account does, but contact the seller and let him know what happened and maybe they'll let you off the hook.  I've bought things then later realized it wasn't what I thought and offered the seller $5 or $10 to let me off the hook and they've done it both times.

RS/6000 was a family of UNIX workstations that used PS/2 compatible keyboards.

The keyboard you linked is not a Model M, it's a run of the mill rubber dome keyboard. It will work with a regular PC, but it's no different to any other rubber dome keyboard out there.

Looks like a KB-0225 rubber dome.

BWAHHHH HAH HAHH HAAA!!!

That's friggin awesome!  I'm not alone, I take it?  Will keep it in mind if it isn't an April Foolery stunt... (Phantom usually tends only to do it when my hands are on the keyboard already, but occasionally he does type in passing so I guess a little kitty insurance couldn't hurt...)

Yeah I thought of that too - but really, if the thing isn't absolute garbage then I may as well keep it since its only $16 out of pocket anyway, and then a +1 feedback as well.  Heck, yesterday I just got my gift card from ipsos I-say surveys for $15 that I totally forgot was coming months ago, so its kinda found money, but was curious if it might actually be useful if not daily usable since I am most likely just gonna pay for it anyway.

Only problem is I can't identify it.  Figured someone here might know more about it or  at least know if its just absolute crap and there isn't anything worth knowing about it...  One index indicated that it might be something called "silent touch" but I can't verify that as there are no photos.

I would offer to give him the $3.25 but let him keep the keyboard so there is no postage to pay.
But other people seem to manage to get sales cancelled if the seller agrees. ebay has procedures to allow it. It's just my personal opinion that $3.25 isn't worth the effort.

Or maybe he has another item you would be willing to take as a substitute. This item seems appropriate!

EDIT >>  wow, that was fast.  Thanks!

Oh yes, I knew that "it was no Model M" :) It was just one that turned up in my search results for it.  Not sure what happened with the bid at all but I guess I'm lucky it wasn't more $ though - especially if I had to eat it.

Once I hit enter without checking that the decimal was in the right place and bid 4000 bucks on a used PS2 that should have been 40 when the going rate was twice that at least.  Ended up winning it for 42.50 anyway (whew!) Guess there are some advantages to being a night owl after all...

You know what?  It's providence.  Believe it or not, that is maybe just exactly what I needed!  I was just trying to find a little inexpensive gift to give one of my friends who is having a difficult time right now - strongly catholic and often turns to that for guidance if not comfort.  That is perfectly suited to the type of gift I was trying to come up with!!

Weird.

I'll get one of those even if the seller doesn't want to work out the keyboard thing anyway

Awesome folks!  Thank you!

When I click on the ebay link it just flashes the listing for a split second before saying bidding has ended, and what's pictured is an IBM branded Lenovo. Oh..need to scroll down to listing. Yeah, Lenovo. It's nothing special, but actually a solid keyboard that usually goes for 20 bucks or more. Heavier construction than some mechanicals. Not a bad spare.

Sure doesn't look new in that pic, though.
