So we went to the Sprint store today for my mom to upgrade her cellphone. She decided on a smart phone; not important.

Anyway, while we were talking with the sales rep at the counter, I, being the good Geekhacker that I am, took a look at the POS keyboard. No label, but the keys had remarkable contrast, considering how old the keyboard looked. I took a few steps over and looked at the keyboard at the other sale point... And saw the familiar Cherry logo.


Kaching, I thought. These guys don't need POS boards, they have POS scanners and stuff. They'd be glad to get rid of these antiquated Cherry boards. They might even give them to me for free. And I can use them, or sell them, or...

I convinced the rep to let me try one of the boards for a few seconds while he talked with my mom. I greedily cracked my knuckles, and started typing...


:yuck: Cherry MY switches


Now I know why you guys hate on these switches. I swear, the only worse keyboard I've ever typed on was my sister's Apple chiclet board, and that at least looks semi-respectable. This was like typing on stiff memory foam or something. No tactile feedback at all. Even on linear switches or rubber domes, the clack/jar from bottoming out serves as a form of feedback. On these it's just like a bottomless well and I can keep pushing harder and harder and never bottom out or receive any signal that a key has registered. Plus they're as stiff or stiffer than my Model M.


Needless to say, we left the store with only phones, no keyboards.

Need to get yourself some MX browns or blues (or both).  They are each oh-so-nice to type on, in different ways.

Got a Compaq MX-11800 with MX Browns that's either at the UPS store or else sitting on my porch waiting to be stolen while I'm out of town... Anyway, I'm looking forward to trying that out. But the MY switches, urgh they're terrible.

Yup.  The only use for MY boards is if you can find them with double-shot caps and use 'em as donors for MX boards.

Those boards might have been double shot... But after typing on it I didn't really feel like bothering with them, or with haggling to see if they'd give them up (doubtful, really). What would the value of a double shot donor board be?

I got mine yesterday, which was shipped out along with yours (I picked up the dot nub one). Oooh, typing on it now, oooh. Actually I think I prefer the feel of the blues on my Scorpius, but not the sound. Why can't they make switches where you can feel the click but not hear it, with keys that bottom out onto a silicone surface? For, ya know, freaks like me with a strange genetic aversion to high pitched noises.

Oh and coincidentally I also was at the Sprint store a couple days ago to get a phone upgrade, and found myself staring at their keyboards. They had Dell multimedia boards, though.

The Sprint stores around here have the Cherry 'boards.  Vicky's Secret uses ML 'boards and the Omni Hotel I stayed at last weekend had a G80-3000-based POS (G80-3000 layout w/card reader) 'board with lasered caps and Cherry browns.

The models aren't in the store, unfortunately.  Remember, you have to stay focused when you're shopping there with your GF/wife.
