Allegedly... An Apple employee misplaced a nextgen iPhone prototype and someone found it.

I was expecting this to be a joke link. I'm actually disappointed it wasn't. I use my phones for making phone calls, new models don't excite me much.

I don't know why people glory over silly things like that, I've never been particularly interested in "upgrades", and the fact you need to keep recyling hardware seems wasteful to me. Plus, Apple never wanted such information to be leaked out, it's good conduct to follow a company's mandates if you're going to buy their products or wish to support them.
Companies should have the right to industry though; tree huggers should go crawl back to their trees, if a company makes some bad environment decisions, oh well. It happens. That's not a reason to shut down companies and ruin the economy.

It's not a 4G phone though. LTE is a bit into the future still. But sure, likely the next iteration of the fruitphone.

So now the big question is, was there really a lost phone that Gizmodo bought and exposed; or are Gizmodo and Apple in kahootz, and this all a big scam for some viral marketing?  Gizmodo made some very stupid, public mistakes (IMO) that lead me to think that viral marketing conspiracy theory has at least a little meat to it.

True that.  It's one reason I stopped reading Tom's Hardware back in the day.

Ah, the old "we took off a Pentium 4's cooler and it didn't go poof but rather continued running" story? (Later it was shown that in spite of all the protective measures, an Intel CPU could still crash or even burn up and die under such conditions.) Sure smelled more like an Intel PR gag.
They shouldn't have used that IR thermometer without reading its manual - it showed like 29°C on the heatspreader (or some other value not too far above room temp), which was highly suspect to a large number of people. Now a metallic object like that is a good bit more reflective than your average blackbody radiator, and as such its temperature will tend to underread. Obviously the processor would have to be running at around the temperature that it takes for throttling to set in.
Hardware in signatures clutters Google search results. There should be a field in the profile for that (again).

This message was probably typed on a vintage G80-3000 with blues. Double-shots, baby. :D

Come on, Apple would never ever do something dishonest like that. They were just testing their prototype under bar conditions and **** happened.
Considering the amount of hair-rising security ****ups in Apple OSes recently, it's obvious their developers are working under bar conditions a lot.

well, from what I hear the guy who found it mailed apple about it and gave them several weeks to get back to him before it fell into gizmodo paws.

afro hair engineer is a real person, too, and from what I hear he's a pal of ycombinator people.

whatever, though, the phone doesn't seem to be much more than a die shrink, so in my opinion not very much to get excited over.

That letter is as much PR as legal request. Any request is going to be publicized, so Apple wants to be nice ... at first ... with a high-profile site like Gizmodo.

I like the last sentence in the letter, "Please let me know where to pick up the unit."  Right... I love a good conspiracy theory, but the one thing that really sinks the idea that this was a planned leak is that they don't need to do this kind of leak in order to get publicity and they're not likely to seek out this kind of publicity because they have no control over it.

There's never too much free publicity. Besides, I doubt Apple developers take their prototypes with them when they're going to a bar.
If they find the mutilated corpse of some iphone developer with bitemarks from Steve Jobs' teeth on his throat, then I'll admit I've been wrong and it wasn't a marketing stunt.

Gizmodo has admitted paying $5000 to receive the phone from someone they knew didn't own it, then they dismantled it. They better get OJ's (original) lawyer if they want to wriggle out of that. Not sure they can be done for anything serious, but they went too far.

That's what makes it interesting. They might actually ask questions on how this super secret prototype ended up in some bar in the first place. :biggrin1: I sense Apple doesn't like this investigation at all.
