Planck - REV4 holtites or REV6 Kailh sockets
« on: Mon, 23 July 2018, 20:36:49 »
Hi guys
I need an advice.

I already got OLKB Planck keyboard from Massdrop with PCB version REV4 and I think about to fit switch holtites on this PCB:
https://pl.aliexpress.com/item/Switch-LED-hot-swap-32pcs-for-mechanical-keyboard-DIY-keyboard/32827918016.html?spm=a2g17.search0104.3.1.57d078a9iRN9Qo&ws_ab_test=searchweb0_0,searchweb201602_2_10152_10151_10065_10344_10130_10068_10324_10547_10342_10325_10343_10340_10548_10341_10696_10192_10190_10084_10083_10618_10307_10820_10301_10821_10303_10059_100031_10103_10624_10623_10622_10621_10620,searchweb201603_12,ppcSwitch_5&algo_expid=3ce3db39-cf17-4ecd-b4df-d574028ff854-0&algo_pvid=3ce3db39-cf17-4ecd-b4df-d574028ff854&priceBeautifyAB=0

All cost would be $30 with free delivery to UK ...but
I discovered that Planck released PCB REV6 with already mounted swapable Kailh sockets:
https://olkb.com/planck/pcb
but all cost would be more expencive: PCB REV6 - $50, shipping to UK - $15 and VAT - ca $10 - in total ca $75.
I could to sell (with loss of course) my current still unused PCB REV4 and to buy REV6 but I am not sure what benefit (apart of mounted Kailh sockets) I will get having REV6 version?

Which option could be more valuable and sensible?
1. keeping REV4, buying and fitting switch holtites.
or
2. selling REV4, buying REV6 with Kailh sockets.

Thanks for any advice.

Get a Rev6.

Holtites are a press-fit, so assuming they fit correctly into a Rev4 Planck, you'll run into problems due to residue left behind on the holes. It'll be a mess of work desoldering, cleaning, pressing, and then you can no longer use those switches you removed if you decide you want them in the keyboard again.

Easily avoidable headaches aside, Holtites are a not even worth looking at now that sockets that were actually designed to accept keyboard switches (with 10x+ the rated cycle life) are on the market for about 1/15 of the price.

It sounds like nightmare.

How about using Kailh sockets on REV4? Will fit for REV4?
I am asking about cause I have one more doubt to buy REV6 - there is USB-C. I have plenty, nice coiled USB mini cables but I don't have any cable with USB-C  :(

This is not an IC post.

Sorry for maybe stupid question - what is an IC post?
