Model M - found a dirty pig
« on: Mon, 03 May 2010, 14:08:34 »
This weekend I picked up another model M. On the outside it didn't look any dirtier than most but the real treat was inside! It looks like a rats nest in there with all the dust bunnies and crap. I've never seen so much dirt in one keyboard... took me a while to clean it but it now outright shines!!!

Ah, a Greenock 42H' style... I might steal the bottom pic for the IBM wiki.

I've seen worse.

Impressive, however.

One of my fav keyboards is an old Cherry that was dirtier than Ripster eating a hot dog in an oyster bar when I got it.  I spent about 4 hours on it and you'd never know it was once covered in rust, automotive grease and who knows what else.  I really wish I had taken before pics of that one.  It's not cost effective to get dirty keyboards, but it's gratifying once you're done cleaning them.

Do the 42H's not have the drainage channels?  Or did that vary?

Interesting...so we've seen Model Ms with drainage channels but not holes, and now with drainage holes but not channels.

No, it's a Greenock thing not to have drainage channels. I've never seen a Greenock-made Model M with them, and Webwit checked all his ones and agreed. They all had the appropriate holes though.

The minis (at least mine) all have holes but no channels on the plastic base plate EXCEPT for my Lexmark Mini Industrial. That's why I'm asking - I'm trying to find out if it's a Unicomp/Lexmark thing.

In fact, I've seen more than a few post-1993 84-keys with no drainage holes at all. I'm thinking maybe that demand wasn't all that high and that even Lexmark was living off old stock.

Hey, I posted a better pic for the wiki in a separate topic.

Cheers,
