post your biggest delusion (keycaps or keyboards)
« on: Thu, 14 February 2019, 14:24:59 »
I'm just curious to hear what are your biggest delusions.

What is the keycap set that looked the best in renderings, but revealed itself very ugly, or what is the keyboard that you thought that you'd love, that revealed to be an insider's joke?

gmk phantom: supposed to be purple and gold, looks like black and butter

Nearly any stock backlit keycaps.

The keyboard I thought I'd love? My first mechanical.

On the other side: the keyboard I thought would be a filler but it turned out to be my daily driver: CM Masterkeys Lite L and Compaq RT101.

I thought I'd like SA sculpted profile keycaps, especially as I used a lot of old terminals back in the day with similar keyboards.

I don't like them.

Uniform SA is good, but only on stiffer switches.

This is very interesting. I decided not to buy the SA made by filco (SP in reality), because it's uniform profile, and instead I like sculpted profiles like OEM and cherry. Maybe I'll reconsider it.

Pretty Unpopular opinion, but I had some illusion that GMK keycap's would be some ultra luxury that dwarf all other keycaps. Reality was there still plastic while they look nice they shine just as fast as any other standard ABS set. They do have nice legends and are thicker but its hard to justify 200 bucks for plastic thats going to look used in 2 weeks.

Gmk is pricy but honestly compared to every other option other than og dyesubs I can't name any current manufacturer that makes caps as consistent and high quality as gmk currently. I'd rather get og doubleshots since they're the same and cheaper though

GMK does have really high quality controls but things are way overhyped for what they are. There just bits of plastic with extremely high quality control. Honestly I think if you placed GMK and JTK keycaps at a Computer Trade Show with prices. 9-10 people would pick the JTK and couldn't even tell ya what was special about the GMK set.

A lot of people used to be hung up on having exact cherry legends and making perfect replicas of OG key sets (and the thickness), there are still those die hard fans but many have moved away from that. That's why GMK was such a big deal. RIP $250 red esc.

I'll second SA keycaps, great for photos but I just didn't like typing on them.

Massdrop x MiTo Laserwave GMK Translucent Keycaps...

In reality, the color blocking parts are messy and not a grid (the plastic pattern is tiny, and got messy during production or something). They are also lower profile than I expected, they sit lower than all other keycap sets I have.

They are so MESSY. Like a bubble gum net melt on the back of your keycaps. But I didn't pay a cent for those caps so they look wonderful, really :-D Since I paid nothing, I didn't know what to expect expect. But sincerely the colour is fantastic.

About the fact that they're lower, I didn't notice it.

+1 for the GMK sets.  I ended up realizing I just like pbt a lot more.  I'm glad to see epbt putting out more and more sets now.  That being said, I do like all the colors and legends on GMK sets and have to resist jumping into the buys.

How does epbt sound? I've got a pbt set in cherry profile, not sure if it is enjoy-pbt, but the sound was so high and annoying that after ten minutes I had to remove them. In addition pbt shines anyway, and in the mean time it feels like dried sandpaper. Having scoops plus bars at the same time (homing in F and J), felt like torture.

I think I've been deluded by everything that has been hyped. Almost nothing is as good as people say, except for Box Navies with SA Keycaps; those actually are awesome. My current thing is lubed MX Blacks; everyone says they're great, but my experience has been nothing but frustrating, yet I still have the idea in my head that I'll build a keyboard with smooth linear switches that sounds and feels great. I've put off the build for several weeks because of my frustration and stubbornness to accept that maybe they just aren't that great.

honestly I thought that the Model M was going to be the greatest thing ever, let me tell you... that was my LEAST favorite board ever.

Model M keyboards vary so much that it's possible you got a bad one. I was lucky that the first two I got were awesome. My third and my SSK on the other hand feel and sound awful.

Maybe they're waiting for gasmasks and latex to get sexy again.

The world has become a weird place.

I'm certainly not as picky as others but I think it sounds fine.  To me, the epbt sounds "heavier", thicker, and more consistent in bottom out sound.  It's more satisfying for me.  I actually prefer the textured finish, as well.  The only thing that I don't enjoy is the bars, but it's something I live with.

kinda a twist but tai hao cubic. They seem like they would be cheap and subpar but they feel and sound excellent with beautiful legends and  a nice sculpt that gives more angle than overhyped cherry profile. If there was taro in anything other than gmk I would jump on that.

Unless you are seeking a specific set that is out of production, I find the contrary - I have boxes of unused keycap (sets) in storage.

For me, it's my Novatouch.  I would say Topre switches in general, but I've only used them in my Novatouch and realize it's not fair to pass sweeping judgement.  I don't hate it, it's just very meh.  It could be a case of "familiarity breeds contempt", considering I've had it for a few years now and hadn't kept up with keyboards in a while.  Over the past few weeks I picked up 2 Leopold FC660M's in Cherry MX Blue and Silent Red and prefer them both to the Novatouch significantly.  I was slightly surprised that I'm preferring the Silent Red to the Blue, considering I usually dislike linears.  I think it reminds me of the things I DO like about the Topre switch, without the funky too-heavy on top then sudden drop-off feel of the Topre.  Not to mention the Topre's distracting upstroke-only clack.

Sorry I was talking about gmk. All sets are vastly overpriced and you have to wait months to obtain them. Nowadays group leaders and proxy and custom colours and designers (???) increase the price by 50% minimum and nobody bats an eye. Look instead at the fantastic wob by massdrop. That's a nice price.

I used a uniform SA keycap set (Danger Zone) with it for awhile also.  I thought they sounded better than stock, being thicker, but felt even clunkier.  I recently tried some of the Leopold's lower-profile doubleshot-PBT keycaps on the Novatouch and it does feel better than stock to me.  Some of the modifier keys knock on the raised housings, though.   It does makes me mildly curious about the FC660C, but the price is prohibitive.

Mine is 40%. I get along fine with 60% but going down one more just messes me up. I love the form factor and everything but just can't seem to get it together.

I have some other ideas on custom labeling keys and adjusting the layers more but so far it feels like I wasted money.

The whole point of doubleshots is that they are SUPPOSED to wear down. It would probably take half a century or so of constant typing in order to wear them down to the switch stem and finally break.

I got convinced by both Reddit and Geekhack that 55g Topre is the best.
Well, not for me anyway. Too heavy for my puny fingers.
45g Topre though.  Not even kidding: That puts a smile on my face everyday. Feels AND sounds so nice and comfy.

45g topre novatouch seems a little bit too heavy for me. I still like cherry MX reds more than that, even after silencing them.

Logitech G810 Keyboard, any Logitech keyboard with Romer-G switches, Logitech mechanical keyboards and Logitech generally.

- Especially the little stems of 90% of keycaps on my G810 keyboard are broken. And that's why some keycaps are now became so loose that when I turn the keyboard upside down, some keycaps fall the the ground :)   And upon close inspection, the bigger pins/stems of almost all the keycaps also began cracking, indicating that they will also break in the future.
- Even tough their Romer-G switches are especially manufactured with double contact mechanism to eliminate chatter, they still do CHATTER and what's worse is they sometimes misregister also.
- The G810 Keyboard has a terrible annoying "ping" noise accompanied with every key press.
- The typing feel of Romer-G switches are mushy, soft and generally unpleasent. Not as solid and snappy like a Cherry MX Brown feel.
- Their Cherry MX based mechanical keyboard keycaps stems also break.
- Their implementation of RGB lighting is problematic. You can't obtain a pleasent bright white light. It either becomes pinkish, bluish or greenish.

- In short, there is a huge durability and reliability problem of Logitech Keyboards. I was wrong to choose Logitech. I only have a Logitech Z200 speaker system now. From now on it's almost impossible for me to buy a Logitech product again if they continue releasing these type of products.

Here is a photograph of 2 of my G810's keycaps:
(Mind you as I said before, almost 90% of keycaps are more or less in this situation. )

Consider me obsessive compulsive but:

All mechanical switches that have metal contacts in it are a big NO for me.

I HATE HATE HATE chatter and misregister. And all mechanical switches that have metal contacts in it are prone to chattering. I had 3 keyboards that had Cherry MX Brown, Cherry MX Blue and Romer-G switches and they were all chattering. (And Yes I tried those keyboards in different PC and environments also, and no I don't smoke and filthy etc..)

In my opinion, when compared to cheap keyboards, a mechanical keyboard must be superior in every way. I used cheap rubber dome and membrane keyboards for years and never have I encountered chattering and misregistering NOT EVEN ONCE. Reliability is a big issue here.

I will most probably never buy a mechanical keyboard that have usual metal contact switches.. (Cherry MX, Romer-G, Kailh, Razer, ALPS ...etc... )

Nowadays I am thinking about buying an optical switched or capacitive switched mechanical keyboard so that at least theoretically they will never have chattering.
Altough I still might consider buying a metal contact switched keyboard IF the switches are not soldered and/hence very easy to replace them if need be.

The only really bad chattering I've ever had was with Matias switches.

With cherry style switches, I seem to get chatter only on the spacebar. I got it on a Cherry MX Blue keyboard and had to swap the switch to fix it. The same thing happened with BOX Royals. I swapped the switch, but it still happens occasionally. I guess it's because the spacebar is the most used key; although, in the case of the Royals, it started happening within a couple weeks of use.
Maybe they're waiting for gasmasks and latex to get sexy again.

The world has become a weird place.

These make a really high and annoying noise:

No they don't. Those sound deeper and quieter than my GMK sets.

Tested with pok3r. Twice in six monts... Do I really have to put them up again?

Never seen the chatter in any keyboard.
