I just had an amazing experience! I have an old NEC APC-H4100E that's been sitting unused in a draw for years. Not sure why I have it or where its from or why I never used it, but I just tried it and WOW!  This is the most incredible keyboard I have tried. Anyone got any details on this model keyboard and its switches?

Its gorgeously clicky, but a bit softer/lighter and quieter than my favourite Model M, and less squishy than my other favourite keyboard, a Realforce. It kind of feels like there is a second click on key release.

The only word I can think of to describe the feel is luxurious.

It's not perfect however. The spacebar feels a bit too heavy, and the enter key on mine feels too weak and bottoms out too easily. It could just be age however.

This is the sort of keyboard that is making me rethink my life. Why did I ignore it for so long??

I feel like I should be wearing purple velvet pants while typing on this keyboard. That’s what it feels like.

Yes, almost identical to the APC-H412.

I also have an APC-H4100E, and for a long time it was my favourite keyboard.  I had one with an NEC APC IV PowerMate PC back in the day, but disposed of it years ago.  Then I found another one some had been using as a footrest under their desk at work.

I actually joined GH to find out more about it, and eventually to source replacement switches to effect repairs to it.

An interesting fact about this keyboard is that you can type on it without the switches clicking it you are careful.

In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

Pete, you almost brought tears in my eyes. I bought that NEC once, and guess what, it got lost in transport, never arrived. :( Looks like I have something to mourn then.

I actually just bought an H412 because I saw this thread, can't wait to get it and see how it feels.

NewbieOneKenobi, that must have been painful to undure...hopefully one day you will find a great deal on a better condition board and be able to enjoy it.

I know not what switches you has, but the NEC keyboard has NEC blue oval switches.
