[IC] Mass Effect Keyset (UPDATE WITH SURVEY FORM)
« on: Sat, 01 February 2014, 09:15:20 »
Hi everyone!
I am a fan of Mass Effect and I just had this little idea (inspired from Matt3o's recent designs in IC), so I thought I'd just try and put them up to see if it'll look nice as keysets.
But shortly after I've done my draft, I'm beginning to doubt my design would make any sense, still I'd like to see the feedbacks from you guys.

I had some time and I just did this little design.
Admittedly, it seem similar to Matt3o's "Midnight" set and boost's "Cheap TKL", but I really like the dark and bright legend contrast and I wanted it to look more or less like the N7 armor.
Here's the draft of my design so far.
Any feedbacks or suggestion is appreciated!

Alternate Set (Without game logo)
DSA - ANSI Full Size
54741-0

DSA - Ergo Dox

Colours used:-
Mods - GSZ
Alpha - GC
Legend - BFQ
White - WFK
Red - RAS

Edit: Pardon the poor pictures, done manually using Paint.NET and GIMP.

Updates1: I've sent an email to SP to ask if they can make the custom keys with the logo. will wait for their reply.
Updates2: No reply from Bioware after a few weeks and after numerous emails have been sent. I guess that's it.
Updates3: Decided to go without game logo keycaps.

i've expected that you'd be interested ;D

yeah, i did consider making F7 as N7.

however, i couldn't figure out a way to make this for 60% boards, as in having the white-red-white stripes.

I am not that devoted to Mass Effect, but I think this is just a really good looking set regardless.  Would go in for one of these.

Unless it runs horizontally, but it would dominate the board that way and would be too much stripe.   I suppose you could try to run the stripe down the 1QAZ, 2WSX, 3EDC, but that probably looks really weird.  Other possibility is to add the stripe as an option for the keypad... then I'll have an excuse to build this 82key board just to run this set...

(Attachment Link)

yeah, doing horizontally would mean the stripe would seem overwhelming, not exactly fitting for the theme.

numpad is kind of hard to execute due to the 2x Ins key as not everyone uses 0 00.
the best i can think of is by doing this.

Will support, also please GMK or SA/DSA SP, not DCS.

i'm actually considering doing DSA for this and probably include Ergodox kit as well BUT this really depends on how well this IC goes.
still yet to see if SP might have issue with the logo or not.
but i heard ppl saying DSA doesn't give a nice feel for tactile switches.
i need to try it out with my own hands first since i'm a fan of blue and clear switches.

as for GMK, where can i find the colour palettes for their keycaps?
http://www.keyboard-layout-editor.com/
i'm using this at the moment, and the colour chips for GMK is very very limited. it doesn't have the colours i wanted.

no worries, April is probably the earliest i'm looking at for the GB to start IF this IC gathers enough interest, SP have no issue with the logo and that the cost is good.

as i mentioned in my earlier post, i'm yet to confirm with SP as to whether they can make those custom keycaps with the N7, Paragon and Renegade logo or not.
i've sent an email to SP asking them about this. let us wait with our fingers crossed! :-X

You know, I imagine back in the day Bioware might have been ok... but EA on the other hand...

We'll only be allowed to use the keys if we install Origin into the keyboard, and the keyboard will need to have an ethernet port so it can be online and send all keystrokes through the EA servers.

I used to live in Edmonton, and I remember when BioWare had their office on Whyte Ave.  A bunch of my high school friends went on to code for them (we occasionally used to pop in as a group of fans to the office back in the day).  Not as friendly or accessible a place nowadays I guess (but maybe that's growing up..) :(

Love this idea. I am a huge fan of the series. It's a stretch, but if Bioware somehow agrees to the N7/Paragon/Renegade keys, do you think some mods would be doable with some of the skill icons? Barrier, Warp, Biotic Charge, to name a few. :)

I love Mass Effect. Played through all of them multiple times.

Though I am not quite sold on the colour scheme just yet I would be interested.
Also:
- Mass Effect on backspace
- Paragon/Renegade on arrow keys
- Arrows on numpad?
- Extra Esc-row keys for numpad (Esc, Tab, FN, Backspace)
- Vote for DCS and SA for profile.

And if possible +1 on class-icons.

You could try to get Bioware in on this groupbuy for their online store.

we'll see how things goes.
i still think it looks better on DSA.
maybe i'm bored with cherry font on dcs  :-X
i may set up a poll if this can progress further.

Also:
- Mass Effect on backspace <-- good idea :thumb:
- Paragon/Renegade on arrow keys
- Arrows on numpad? <-- i'll make one mock up and see. but putting arrow might probably mean making new mold if SP don't have that already
- Extra Esc-row keys for numpad (Esc, Tab, FN, Backspace) <-- 1x key for these?
- Vote for DCS and SA for profile. <-- won't be doing SA for this, will consider between DCS and DSA.

And if possible +1 on class-icons.

as of now, i wouldn't put my hopes in seeing custom keys with the awesome ME icons/logos, seeing there's no reply from bioware's side.
also, if we miraculously got a permission from bioware/ea, i'd like to keep the cost low by not having so many custom keys.
still it's a possibility to get more custom keys if the response is good after we climb over this big hurdle right in front of us.

With regards to having "Mass effect" on one of the keys (or some of the keys) would a regular (for example if it was backspace, a normal backspace key) be included? If it was just part of the default set then presumably the price increase would be minimal, I'm just not massively keen on the mass effect key, I prefer my sets a bit subtler than that :P It wouldn't put me off buying the set mind, just a suggestion.

Whoa. Good looking set.  I'm a huge fan of the series. I would love to get a set of these.  :thumb:

Why not ditch the whole idea of calling it mass effect and just release as its own colorway? I can't see any company having a trademark on a color theme. Call it "Space RPG" or something.

Or how about "2183 Space Opera".

So sorry about the lack of updates! It's been a busy couple of weeks for me :(
Still haven't gotten any replies from bioware after numerous emails have been sent out.
At this point, I am beginning to think that the game icon won't happen anymore, unless there's a miracle :p

This is some minor adjustment done to it.
I just emailed SP yesterday to see if it's alright with the text N7 key and Mass Effect backspace.
Looking at the N7 winkey, it looks lacking somehow...what do you guys think?

I think I want to do this in DSA, Wyse font instead of the overload Cherry font on the GB recently.
But I'll set up a poll or a survey form for this, seeing that the original plan isn't coming to fruition.

That still looks super good. You dont even need n7 on there. Use this and call it a day.

If we go with DCS and Cherry font, could you have only the nav cluster as an option, as I think it would go well with Dolch.
