[IC] Cheap Doubleshot ABS colored keycaps

Hey guys!

Having missed the Tai Hao group buy last summer, and not wanting to deal with Tai Hao personally as I am not confident about my ability in individually hosting a Group Buy, I contacted Signature Plastics to get a quote for a full doubleshot ABS set like the ones offered in the Tai Hao group buy.

For a single color set (with different color legends - for example, red keycaps with white legends), at 500 orders, this will be about 27 dollars (not including shipping?). This is much more expensive than  the TaiHao keys, but SP currently does not have the resources to be able to compete with such low prices in the East.

The keycaps will be DCS profile, and modeled basically completely after the TaiHao keys. Red, green, blue, yellow, and black will be offered, and only ones that make it past the MOQ will be produced.

Everything here is subject to change based on what most people seem to want, and what SP is willing/able to do. Please post if you're interested as this will not be started unless there is sufficient interest.

EDIT: See ghostofharry's post below. He actually contacted TaiHao and found some new colors they have available, at a much lower price than what SP can offer. Kudos if this goes through!

Novelty keycaps might be pushing it if the goal is a cheap doubleshot set. I agree with ISO and Tsangan addons though, 7x spacebar maybe too (although additional spacebar might drive up price too much? I have yet to find out)

Keypop is selling TaiHao keycaps. They are out of stock, and will be out of stock until TaiHao is willing to produce more. I contacted Keypop about this and they said they said that TaiHao was being unresponsive (presumably TaiHao - they just said their supplier overseas was being unresponsive), and that they would make a Group Buy on Geekhack soon^TM. I personally am rather impatient and would rather not wait that long for a group buy that may or may not happen (I haven't heard any mention of it elsewhere on the forums?).

taihao was really popular because you got a full set for just $10. If your goal truly is to get a cheap doubleshot set, then don't go with SP and go to taihao. if you're really insistent on SP, then take advantage of their tooling and get everything that you can. you don't even need to make one set, just have novelties as a separate option

Yea... $10 for a full set is such a low price that similar group buy at probably $30 wouldn't have nearly the same kind of attraction.

I've been trying to think of color schemes that would go well with a theme lately for group buy ideas that have some type of theme with them - I missed out on Raindrop and Miami, and I'm impatient (also a little more variety never killed anyone). Do most successful group buys have some type of "theme" to them? (Coffee, bumblebee, toxic, miami... do you know what hyperfuse's inspiration or "theme" was? Why was Hyper Fuse so successful?)

Hyperfuse was successful IMO due to the unique colorway, this is the essential ingredient for any successful GB, besides Tai Hao, where it was so cheap, that even though most member here prefer Cherry/DCS profile over OEM, we still had more than 2000 sets ordered. Oh and Dolch and Beige are exceptions too, they are just so classy.

A theme isn't necessarily important, it has to be a unique colorway, something that hits the chords with the masses like Toxic, Hyperfuse, Calm Depths. Or be dirt cheap.

from what i have quoted, MOQ is 100 for each colour 
and the price is around $14 usd, only for the product itself, exlcuding tax and any transport fee
this includes 105 keys, with the standard 104keys and a cherry stepped capslock




if enough guys are interested maybe I can hold a taihao round 2?
as theres 3  new generations of colours since the last gb we had in gh

Strongly and enthusiastically support Moz’s views.

1)   Do not go for any color that is available at Tai Hao. People who like Tao Hao’s colors so much can order from them.
2)   PLEASE go for DSA profile. I don’t personally need it, but I don’t mind it. But for the many, many people who use ergodoxes or colemak or dvorak or want their own custom layouts, it’s a lifesaver. This also applies to our non-US/ non-English language friends, some of whom have QWERTZ or AZERTY. Tao Hao can’t produce DSA.
3)   As Moz and Pacifist said, get different price tiers, get mod sets for winkeyless and other layouts.
4)   Let’s leave novelty keys out. Too much trouble to organize and it won’t be cheap. There are plenty other ways to get wallethacked on this website.

GhostofHarry, awesome work on the TaiHao! I think I’m really going to buy multiple sets if you have that group buy going. MOQ100 is easily met for all colors except maybe green; I can’t see their legends at all...

Just FYI, profiles such as DCS, DSA, and SA are an SP thing. Tai Hao could have a Cherry-esque profile (I don't think so) but it wouldn't be called DCS.

In anycase, AFAIK Tai-Hao can do Alps/MX in OEM profile and another highly textured rubber format which is something else altogether.

I originally made this thread to go for a cheap doubleshot set of keycaps, so another interest check tgread for DSA caps from SP would probably be best. Ghostofharry's post about new tai hao colors looks amazing. SP simply can't provide prices as low as tai hao, so I think ghostofharry is our best bet.

 And for the record for the interest check, if another tai hao group buy was creared, I would definitely be interested (would probably buy multiple sets).

What I love about taihao is its so cheap you can afford to buy everything and then make whatever design suits you. Its not that good for an end game kind of set, but it sure is easy to mess around with

Just remember that their 7x space bars had incorrect stem placement. Have they fixed that?

You could always combine the alphas from the TaiHao sets with other Tsangan mods! TaiHao sets are so cheap that I would buy just alphas at that price for doubleshots.

The problem is, I only play with customized keyboard now, and all layouts I'm interested in require tsangan. But those cheap good looking Taihao sets are constantly tempting me. I wish there could be more GMK group buys so that I won't think about anything else.

MOQ are calculated seperately according to different colour.

When that colour of keyset are in stock
The MOQ is 100 in this case, and thats when they have stock of that colour.
around 4 weeks are needed for delivery
And the price is around $14 USD for the product alone

When that colour of keyset is out of stock
MOQ of 300 is needed for them to produce again.
This requires around 8 weeks for production and delivery

They need the amount of orders from us to quote for the delivery cost from taihao to me

I think there wont be any problem ordering keycaps from them
But we would need more info from them before we start taking order here

Haha, mostly here to find some cheap doubleshots for myself. Why? So i can justify buying more boards - where else will I put all these lovely keycaps? (Kidding... kind of that is )

Finally, someone I know more addicted than I am.
They do fit just fine vertically over caps, one gripe I have about wire is that I always have to use my ring puller in spacebar/shift/etc. They work well on every key, best part about them.

Ahh, I see, so the one already produced will sell as they are in the photos above at 100 MOQ. Any custom orders will have 300 MOQ.
