This is the year where SSDs (solid state disks) price plummets, so I though it would be a good idea to make one centralized thread to post all the SSD sales. I'll start off with this one.

Are OCZ drives any better than they were ever? I seem to hear that name come up as the brand to avoid more often than others (other than Intel because of the price premium).

OCZ *4 are now marvell controllers with firmware written by employees formally of Indilinx. Can't be all that bad really (if they really managed to keep the indilinx people at least)

Every company has different phases of good and bad series. It's hard to generalize like this. Often, the people that have bad experiences are also the loudest. There are no other company that came out with more SSD models than OCZ. Having said that, with one of the largest market share of SSD, there are bound to be people that have problems, but this doesn't necessarily mean that they have the highest percentage of lemon rate. Even a very small percentage of problems will translate to many complainers because of their sheer volume. I've personally owned nearly all generations of OCZ drives except the newest vertex/agility 4. Their first few SSDs that came into the market (Core series v1) was complete garbage, and needed many tweaks just to get it working properly. When vertex/agility 1 entered with 3rd party indilinx controllers, this was a milestone for performance and reliability for them. Then when sandforce controllers were introduced, the Agility 3 I had had problems with crashing. After many firmware flashes, it finally fixed the problem. The vertex 2 had no problem, although it was also sandforce-based.

I just want to reiterate that no SSD company has a perfect record. Even a highly reliable company like Intel had 2 noteable problems: one was from the x25m firmware flash and the other was from one of their newer sandforce drives. Having said all this, OCZ is not a brand I would personally praise, but at the same time not a company I would consider bad-mouthing to friends. If you need something reliable, then perhaps Intel or Samsung SSD's are the way to go. Although nowadays, most company's flagship SSD's are generally pretty reliable without sacrifice to performance.

I also think desktop motherboards needs more optimization in BIOS boot. Notebooks and ultrabooks nowadays are faster at booting through bios until it starts to load the OS.

everything i heard about OCZ for the last few years has been 'stay away'. i know everybody puts out some duds here and there.

i'd rather see every company putting out good products so prices get lowered. good to hear OCZ is getting their act together.

If I didn't already have a M4, I would have grabbed one at this price. Or if TRIM can somehow be transferred to RAID0, I would grab another also.

As good as the price is, I'm holding out for a 512 gb ssd deal. I've got two 120 gb OCZ Vertex 3 running raid 0 for months now and haven't had any problems, but I'd rather have one ssd running with more overall space than running a raid 0 because running two on raid 0 doubles the possibility of a hard drive failure.

Been using SSD since ~08, my first was only 100/60 Read/Write and it blew my mind, some of these are hitting 500+!!! I'm still on the fence on the whole SSD-failure claim.

Just going to come in and mention that of the multiple OCZ Vertex 3s I've had I haven't had a single issue thus far. This thread makes me pretty curious where all the problems come from though. I'll definitely be buying a Vertex 5 or something whenever I build my next rig. Best performance, one of the lowest costs.

Apple is using the Samsung 830s in their newer MacBook Pros, so at least they endorse the reliability of the drives. I've also only ever heard good reviews about OCZ Vertices (Vertexes? damn proper case), with the ridiculous exception of 1 and 2 egg hatred reviews on Newegg.

Here is an intel x25m. It's SATA2 speeds, not the newer SATA3. But differences between these two interfaces are very slim. I remember these drives were the hallmark of speed, reliability, and TRIM.

I have one and really like it except for the fact that it's full already. When I buy another one it will be another 830 in either 256Gb or 512Gb depending one the money situation when I get fed up with moving games off and back onto my SSD

I'm hoping on a deal for either a Crucial or Samsung 512 gb ssd. I would prefer a larger single ssd then running two 256 gb ssd on raid 0 as there's a smaller chance of a hard drive failure with a single drive.

Hmmm, the 512's have historically been not as fast as 256. Still quite nice of course.

About the only thing I have that could go SSD and need more than 256GB is my games partition. Otherwise I'm more than good w/ 128GB could likely do 64GB.

Hmm, I always thought that bigger = faster to an extend. I guess 256Gb is the sweet spot.

128Gb is more than enough for an OS and almost any program. However I like ARMA 2 and mods which eat up GB like nothing else. I think base ARMA 2 is 8Gb, Combine Operations is 11Gb and most mods are between 100Mb-6Gbs

Plus games like BF3 eat up a lot of space. Most of the games I'm not currently playing are on my HDD but I still don't have enough space on my SSD. Everytime PlanetSide2 has an update, I have to uninstall Gimp or OpenOffice lol

The 512 perf issue is one of die size... 256GB uses same number of controller channels as 512, so there's a performance hit there to deal with addressing twice the space.
