custom aluminium keyboard - Aries
« on: Fri, 02 May 2014, 08:28:08 »
hi guys,

so i think most of us drool at those korean customs all the time, but being the guy that likes to tinker around, i tried making one of my own. things started since at the end of last year and was moving slowly as it was a personal side project that i had no intention to rush on. here are some pictures;  :)

machining;

after anodizing, plain black;

the people at the machining and anodizing place are nice and helpful, but sadly, their final handling of my stuff are left to be desired. there were scratches all over, even after anodizing. there were a few places at the edges where the anodizing actually chipped off.  :-X

so i was not going to waste time arguing and such, and since this was something i looked forward to play around while making, i decided to powdercoat it.

again, nothing is without its price. the powdercoating was not perfect too, there were marks left below the arrow cluster. but this time it was not a big deal, since powdercoating can be easily removed and redone compared to anodizing. not too sure about this though, it was what the powdercoating guy said.  :))  the board is satin bronze black, it looks nice and overall, im pleased with everything.

for now, it is still unfinished as a complete keyboard, i'm waiting for the NerD tkl pcb from GON and when it arrives, assembly can start. the board was designed using the A87 pcb family dimensions and of course a few design tweaks of my own.  :cool:

so i welcome any comments and questions from you guys. apologies for potato pictures and special thanks to Photekq for his comments and guides earlier on this build, your help was priceless! i name this keyboard, Aries. cheers!

Man that looks great....AND YOU INCLUDED MACHINING PORN!! My favorite! Thanks for posting all these pictures! I have a few questions:

Are those Costar Stabilizer holes?

What boards did you base your board on?

What switches do you plan on using in that?

How heavy is that case??

machining porn always gets you eh capt   :D

the board is kinda from a kmac2 and the tek-80, its 23mm thick at the front part, not very heavy at 2.5kgs and i plan on having stock cherry switches. they are just nice as it is i think.

i think for sure your dad can. the machining and material (6061 alu) is at $310, sandblasting and anodizing $23, powdercoating $9 and a few dollars on screws. i've given them in USD but i paid in MYR since i'm in Malaysia. just to give you the correct currency.

thanks bro. honestly i got quite some oohhs and aahhs from the machining guys on your tek-80 when i showed pictures of it as basic ideas.  ;D

Ooh, ahh, thanks for the pics! :) you don't hear of many powder coated cases around here. How rough is the surface? Do skin cells get stuck on it, if you were to run your fingers/hand along the surface?

well it crossed my mind a few times, maybe but no promises.  :)

the color/material i used has a smooth surface, it is not too sticky like acrylic but smudges do stay behind just a bit if you're sweaty. i would say much like some bicycle parts, you can barely see them and it wipes off easily.

eh, i forgot, mx clears. it does feel scratchy but i just like to enjoy how it was made to be. no disrespect to people tuning them though.  ;D

+1 for machining porn, and a really great style of case. Very solid look to it, I like that.

Always the finish is the pain. It's about time someone here decided to venture into buckets of acid and wild volts flying around for some in-forum anodizing with tender loving care. I would but the first time our cats knocked over a bucket of acid I am sure someone would complain...

we have a fantastic powdercoater in iowa, if you want your finishing done right. your coater was right. it's much easier to remove powder paint (it's just a polyester copolymer melted evenly onto your part) than it is to remove an oxider layer.

check out the panavise group buy to see a sample of rainbow's work.

well the powdercoating was meant to cover the problems from the anodizing at the first place. now that its done, i think powdercoating is very durable and nice and if there is any future boards im making, i would seriously consider powdercoating it instead.

@Sifo it would be better if it was pink huh.  :p

@lotus1109 @YongJK HAOs like you guys don't need my noob casing.  :-[

@agodinhost @Acetrak @epzy @RabRhee thanks for the kind words guys. if i could find a better machining and coloring place, a gb might just be on. but no promises though! i would honestly be lost in doing gb's especially involving international buyers. :)

@codyeatworld the plate turned out nice except for scratches too.  :-X

oh wow, nice job on the panavises. my current powdercoater is quite rough on his works, but shipping to and from the US on my side would sink everything in costing i guess.  :))

What size radius did you put in the corner of the square holes for the plate? They look pretty large and the tolerance on the mx swit chess pretty tiny comparatively

i'm not sure, the switch holes drawing were taken from some open-source drawings i got at kbdmania. i tried fitting some switches, it was tight but it fits OK.
