This is sick!
I spent hours looking for braided USB cables, only cable I found were on alibaba but I had to buy like 1000
I need to figure out what cable set up I want.
Is the Heatshrink the part that masks the solder between the cable and the connector?

Heat shrink is the poor mans molded plastic around the connector.  Yes, it covers the solder job as well.

I've actually been searching for nice snap together USB hoods to be used in place of heatshrink but can't seem to find any.

For example, I use this bulk wire from lcom. A little more expensive, but make the quality of the cable much better. I figure if you're paying $28 or more, you deserve a quality custom sleeved cable.

Funny you say that... Leopolds have a removable cable though I don't know how well a cable will or will not fit throught the channels in the case. You could always make the center channel bigger with a file without too much hassle. I love my Leopold, wouldn't trade it for anything.

I don't think I would be able to pull off a good quality coiled cable. I'm sorry!  I've seen the ones whiskers had made and they're awesome. I just don't want to commit and say yes.  I'll order some parts and give it try first.

I did it to both my filcos following this video:

notes:
 - you'll have to cannibalize a filco cable (or any cable with the same pcb connector)
 - Hot glue the crap out of the cable into the case so it doesn't move around
 - you'll have to shave a little plastic off the sides of the lower have of the case so the female connector will fit.
 - I used cables like this one. If you shave the rubber off the sides of the female end, you can pull the plastic part off as well.

Afaik you could do that. I think the guts of all USB cables are the same red/green/white/black.

Yes sir, I can. Everything except up angle USB-A.

mouser has USB-A male connectors for .68c and mini-b male connectors for about 1.38 i think. both have MOQ of 1 and prices begin to drop pretty quick when ordered in quantities of 10 or more.

Gold connector points and gold plated USB housing. Supposedly better conductivity, but in this case it's just for looks. Price is high because the supplier is expensive. I'm working on getting USB end connectors powder coated.

There are 2 wiper contacts that touch the housing directly in line with the 2 rectangular holes on the side that is just the housing metal.  The shell/housing is connected to ground as are the 2 wipers.  However the major job of the wipers is a slight retention force bump.



In the pic above you can see a wear mark in line with the left hole, that's from the wiper.

Shame I need to wait for GOLD to show up.  But Gold and Carbon Fiber has always been my pet love.  When I receive this cable and check out it's build quality, will definitely order some extra Aramid Cables as well.
