[IC] DCS Wyse Compatibility 2024 - ON HOLD
« on: Sat, 13 July 2024, 12:31:55 »
Introducing DCS Wyse Compatibility Kit 2024!

IC FORM HERE

Welcome everyone and thank you for clicking on my IC for DCS Wyse Compatibility 2024. This is my first IC on Geekhack, so any feedback would be much appreciated!

Background:

I have wanted to run this set for a while ever since I joined salt rock lamp's GB in 2020. I also have a PCE ISO Wyse keyset that I would love to use on my custom keyboards. I am hoping to bring support for old keysets with limited support into 2024.
Let's crack out those vintage keycaps!

History on Wyse:

More

This is IC is for compatibility (Moogle style) kits that will allow you to use vintage Wyse keycaps with modern keyboard layouts.

There is a piece of text that I found on salt rock lamp's original IC which explains the history of Wyse keycaps:

Quote
The original keycaps are doubleshot ABS keycaps made by Comptec in the DCS profile. Comptec later became the familiar manufacturer Signature Plastics, who will be producing these compatibility kits. Original Wyse keycaps are widely available and usually very cheap.

More information can be found on the Wyse Deskthority wiki

The kits:

PCE / Bottom Row

Extensions

ASCII / DEC

Credit to Densus for the kit renders!

I have tried to simplify the number of keys required for each layout, while also balancing max compatibility. It was difficult as I had to take some important keys out in order to reach a feasible price point. If there is anything you think I have missed out, please do not hesitate to reach out!

Renders:

Alveus

Soon TM

Rake

Soon TM

Unknown Full Size ???

Credit to Densus for the renders (they look sick)

Pricing & MOQs:

Estimated pricing is as follows:

KitPrice (USD)MOQ (Minimum order quantity)
PCE/Bottom row kit$55.0075
Extensions kit$45.0050
ASCII/DEC kit$55.0050

Vendors:

USA & SEA - KLC
UK - Prototypist
EU - Keygem
AU - Cafege

Kit configurations:

PCE: PCE / Bottom Row (+ Extensions optional)
ASCII + DEC: PCE / Bottom row + ASCII / DEC (+ Extensions optional)

Additionally, you can also use the ASCII / DEC kit to convert an ISO PCE set to ANSI :)

Colours:

All colours are SP stock colours:

    Dark gray: GTD
    Light gray: GSX
    Blue legends: BBI
    Yellow legends: YY

Finally, here is a cool picture I found from the original Moogle kit GB:

I also found a variety of Wyse images that salt rock lamp put together, enjoy!

Credits:

Densus - Big big thank you for all your help with this project, you are a real one :)

Lightning - Thank you for answering my dumb questions and helping with feedback

Salt rock lamp - Appreciate your permission and support !! <3

Blacksimon - for being Blacksimon, I guess?

For folks who saw my own Wyse DCS set posted last night, I wholeheartedly endorse this, and will be changing my own set to SA profile so it doesn't conflict. We really had no idea about each other's efforts, and it was a case of weirdly coincidental timing. That said, I'm happy to see a Wyse-themed DCS set coming from anyone, even if it's not mine. I really hope this goes well, and wish the designer nothing but the best.

Pretty cool project.

When it comes to kitting, probably would be best to see another b key in the PCE kit, just so people don't have to use two wyse sets and a 1u alt in the extensions kit, as that fills out mx hhkb support with the 1.5u supers.

Other than that, 6u bar would be cool somewhere as well as well as 00 key.

GLWIC
keyboard collection - fjell
More
cherry blacks - unlubed - filmed and springswapped with tx 55g mediums - alu Plate | pretty happy with this, the blacks were cherry picked so they weren't that scratchy to begin with, but currently breaking them in, may lube them with a dry lube like ro59 or ptfe powder.
| hhkb bt
More
lubed with tribosys 3203 | like topre a lot, prefer it lubed but did make less tactile but that might have been a skill issue. probably will get more tactile over time as the domes age.
| m0115
More
bad orange alps lol | definitely needs a restoration. planning on wax boiling them and maybe a replacement pcb because the board has only 2 key rollover apparently.
| praxis
More
gateron yellows - lubed with 205g0 - 62g tx mediums - pc plate | probably my favourite keyboard already, feels super nice and sounds pretty good, it's got a great layout as well. probably gonna build this with mx browns, I feel like it would suit the board more.
| camo filco
More
stock with silent reds | Pretty cool looking board, the silent reds are actually good, they are smooth and I don't mind the mushiness (it's not even that mushy as well). the layout is pretty weird, but is useable. will probably mod this in the future. maybe a pcb and plate swap, change the keycaps to something dolch like, and also spring swap the springs in the silent reds.
| ibm model f at
More
stock, needs a cleaning and probably replacement foam. Do plan to change layout so it has split bs and rs, as well as ansi enter.
| baebae tkl
More
Built with new nixies on pc half plate. Love this board already, probably the best looking board I own, those brass accents are so mint. Really like it as is, but I do want to try an alu build (probably with nixies as well) just to experiment with that.

I would suggest splitting the kits into smaller kits to reduce the price for some buyers and removing some keys. 2020 Wyse Moogle cost under $40 for PCE and under $20 for ASCII. However, with much less keys included obviously.

If I am buying both PCE and ASCII at current pricing, I could also just buy a whole base kit of another set for the same price instead.

we don't even get alphas wallahi we are finished

So the idea is meant to be a compatibility set, not a full keyset - it is intended to allow you to use vintage DCS keycaps from WYSE terminal keyboards with current layouts - TKL, 65% etc.

Yes I am aware of the current pricing, it is pretty harsh from SP - the quotes I received are very high but I am going to try to work with my vendors in order to get the price as low as it can be.

I do not think that it is fair to compare this to the 2020 Wyse addon GB since prices (in general for materials for example) have gone up significantly since then, plus my kitting does provide more support for a wider variety of layouts.

Yep I can look into adding a b in the PCE kit, that makes sense.

6u added.

00 I can definitely look into adding, but the idea was to provide "base set compatibility" or as close to that as I can... I'll check the numbers from my IC form and decide whether to add it or not.

Is it possible to have the ASCII set legends top left aligned, to better match the originals? Versus center left?
(Attachment Link)

Hiya, thanks for the feedback

I did consider this, but personally I like the look of the text+icon mods more, I think it suits DCS a lot better (I am not a huge fan of text-only mods). Also, since I am combining ASCII support and DEC support into one kit, I don't think it will mean a reduction in the number of keys to be purchased.

Although I do agree that it looks better, as someone who would want to reuse some original ASCII or Dec keys, and both are top left aligned, it would make them look out of place with these somewhat.

Hhkb control key for example I'd want to reuse, from the ASCII.

Even though we had the opportunity to buy the full set via GB (e.g. DCS SMRT), it's really sad that we can only use this set normally by purchasing an NIB-grade Wyse Terminal keyboard that's hard to get now and extracting the keycap.
Don't you really have a plan to include a TKL base set?

The intent was for this to run first to cater to those with OG caps, a Wyse inspired set can still happen in the future.

No plans to make this a full set

I mean it's not like you have to use caps from a NIB Wyse board. IME if the board wasn't used to the point the caps are severely shined & the caps aren't stained with anything they usually clean up ok. Most of my OG thin DCS sets I want these for are used already.

Not sure where these "estimated prices" came from, but you should reach back out and have Melissa give you a current quote.

Your consideration is appropriate here, and I commend you on that, but I would have been buying your full kit in addition to a moogle kit. I have a set of ISO PCE, but it is so yellowed that I am not as excited by the prospect of making it usable as I am by a clean full set.

Any plans to add an extra r4 1u alt for real HHKB compat? You’re 95% of the way there anyway.
Collection: Unikorn, De_Vision, Dodici, Cloudline, Heavy 6, HHKB Pro 2, Ripple, Ampersand

I was thinking about this today; has anyone ever run a Wyse accents kit?

Latest update - this is now on hold as I am waiting for updated renders and also waiting for improvement in SP prices. Unfortunately, I am not happy to run this at current SP prices as they are too high from what I would expect given the quantity of keys.
