DIY Keyboard Roof - Updated:15 June
« on: Fri, 31 May 2013, 15:27:39 »
Here in India, dust is a major issue and it gets inside switched. Add to it the polluted and humid weather, the dust sticks and is very hard to remove. Forget compressed air.

As a way to reduce this dust, I am planning on making a keyboard roof. The keyboard will be the Ducky Zero DK2108.

Their will be two lengths of feet, at the back and the front (Like most roofs).

Dimensions:
Back feet: 19" x 2.5"
Roof: 19" x 6.5"
Front feet: 19" x 1.8"

These are just rough estimates, I will have the exact dimensions, once I get the keyboard in my hands.

Now the purpose of this thread: I want to get ideas from fellow GHers about what I could get etched on the roof.

My current idea:
Back feet: geekhack logo in the middle
Roof: No idea
Front: Name in the right corner

I want it to be something nice/elegant yet not tacky/cheap

Throw your ideas!

I LOVE the logo found in the bottom right of the picture below. The picture is from this thread. I know you said you wanted the logo on the back leg of the roof but I'd put a logo on the top.

Otherwise, if you want an idea of some really awesome engraving, check out what jdcarpe engraved here. If you have a logo/image you're really attached to, you should go with that. :D

Keyboard roofs are cool but I've just been using the plastic cover that came with my ducky that fits right over the keys.

There are also a few threads about these you might want to search and look through to get more ideas.

My customer keyboard roof - it works!  I live in a very dusty area, and the keyboard has remained fairly dust free.

"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

I think these two combined with a little custom stitch work would be very interesting.

That's simple and effective, but very, very well done :)

You guys won't believed if I told you that it cost only $14.

Bulk would be around 10-12 with custom designs.

I am located in India, here labour is pretty cheap. Not sure about shipping. If there are enough interests I could host a GB.

Based on weight of product, shipping would be about:

$ [ L x (W + 12) ] * 0.01 + 3 rounded up to integer

Approx = $12 for 60%, $16 for TKL, $19 for Full

Price approx would be: $10 for 60%, $15 for TKL, $20 for full and $5 for engraving

I know the price is higher than what I had mentioned earlier, but that is because I have gotten a worksman with better quality, price includes shipping materials, and due to forex rate increase materials have become expensive here.

L = Length of roof in cm
W = Width of roof in cm

These are approximates.
