Stars? We have stars?
« on: Sun, 09 June 2013, 11:50:56 »
Yes.  GeekHack now has stars associated with various member groups and types. For the moment, we have only rolled out a few types as a trial.  More will follow.

The short version is that PURPLE stars are staff or others here to help.  GREEN stars are for vendors and other members where money is involved.  WHITE will be for non-profit/no-money sellers and service providers.

Staff

      Administrator

      based mod

      Senior Moderators

      Global Moderators

      Marketplace Moderator

or Vendors of various sorts

Non-Profit

We will add more stars over time.  (We have a dozen ready to go.)  Some will be automatic; others will be based on a member's role on GeekHack.  And a few will be for community awards.

Anyhow, we think they are a good thing.  A small minority of the 20,000+ 59,000+ GeekHack members will get a star.  A tiny fraction might get more than one.  Prize one if you get one.  Lobbying won't get you one, but helping the community flourish will help.

More information will be provided as the rollout proceeds.

TL;DR Stars are here. You want one. Be a good geekhacker and you might get one!

Announcing Elder Stars...

Upon hitting kiloposter (and multi-kiloposter) status, Elder members -- who are not otherwise star-equipped -- may select one of the following stars to officially adorn their profile:

1,000 Posts:

       Esteemed Elder Cyan

       Exquisite Elder Pink

2,000 posts:

       Elevated Elder Silver

And for the rare few who attain FIVE THOUSAND posts, the elusive:

       Exalted Elder Black

***NEW***

And for the fewer that have attained TEN THOUSAND posts:

      Elated Elder Orange

12,345 posts:

      Certified Spammer

And for that one (so far) who has a whopping 20,000 posts:

      Erudite Elder Gold

Uplevel not mandatory if desired color already attained.  No cash value.  Recipients may be asked annoying questions by lesser mortals and noobs, and are expected to answer with the grace and dignity with which they are endowed.

Note: We will not telepathically know the color you'd like, or even if you'd like one.  So if you earn and want a star, please PM an Admin or a Senior Moderator.

Edit: Added new stars and a tin of spam!

Give tp4 a brown one!

But, more clutter in the left column :( How about combining it with the online/offline icon by a user's name? Online could be star + twinkle, or something like that :D

I think there is a heck of alot over there now; I do like the stars and I'm not starting the old avatar argument up again, but I'm not sure what could be lost?
unless they have some unforeseeable downside (like they're actually made of cream cheese cunningly disguised as ABS)

The links for the stars are broken in the OP.

And I'm a little worried about the stars honestly. I don't like how people feel like there's this elite cadre of GHers who get all the goodies and what not. I think the stars might reinforce that. We have members of all kinds and it's part of the adventure here on GH to discover who does what.

Of course that being said, can I have a purple star? :P Sorry, didn't read the OP properly. I just really like purple.

ooo i got a vendor star, on a serious not, even if it means i lose my vendors one(although id like to keep it) , i would like a non profit star, i am doing the monthly geekhack merch and its totally no profit and vendor wise right now thats how most people will think of me and its totally separate from what i am doing as a vendor, and i feel it important to note that it is a totally non profit venture

Ahem.  kmiller8 gave himself a DIY star and in return got a disclaimer next to his name.  Same for Sifo and esoom.  We're trying hard here, and that just doesn't help.

On the actual star-power front, I gave everyone with a Vendor Forum a Vendor Star.  For full disclosure purposes, people like Carter from CM got a "Commercial Vendor" star.  There is zero difference in how Vendors and Commercial Vendors should act or be treated, but the difference may help some people understand who is whom.

Back to the pretend stars...

We are in fact reserving the Gold Star for special things.  We are not planning any moose-shaped stars.  There are other colors spoken for, but Pink has not been assigned.  Please suggest a meaning and criteria and we'll consider it.

Also, IMHO, Soarer did a really, really good job with the avatar&stars image.

Is the decision of who gets a star done solely by the mods? Maybe we should have a thread to nominate people explaining why we think so. For example, I think  WFD should get a star for all the help he's done helping the community with their soldering questions. His videos are gold as well!

While I understand the point of the admin/vendor/group buy organizer (that's what non-profit seems to say to me), these other stars seem like just a reason for popularity votes (ala the post immediately above mine), ostracization("tp4 needs his own star for trolling"(never thought I'd defend him)) and segregation.

Ok, send me the text and I'll restore it.  My apologies for not saving it; I was surprised to even see it in that field.

Not rustled, and pink stars have been prepared.

Is the decision of who gets a star done solely by the mods? Maybe we should have a thread to nominate people explaining why we think so. For example, I think  WFD should get a star for all the help he's done helping the community with their soldering questions. His videos are gold as well!

Not the mods; the admins.  And as non-qualitative as we can manage.  However, something very much as you suggest is planned.

Those weren't the reasons, but they could be the effects.  We shall watch and see.

Why do we even need stars to distinguish what people are? why not just have the line below the custom text?

Because the line of text seemed cold and the stars are useful for quickly capturing meaning at a glance.  Also, as has been duly noted, there is a lot of text around the (now larger) avatars.

FYI, stars are part of the baseline forum package that simply hasn't been used until now.  They are common in other forums large and small.  But frankly, debate and discussion was expected.  That is why this subject has its own thread.

I like keyboards and case modding.  Everything about a computer should be silent -- except the KEYBOARD!

Ok, I can agree with that, the stars do add a nice color to an otherwise text-full area, is it possible to perhaps consolidate the stars and the title onto one line? It's quite the waste of vertical space to have Custom Title, Forum Role, Star, and Avatar. with the star taking up an entire line of less than 10px.

Just my thoughts on it.

If you guys are so rustled, give me a real pink star.

I DEMAND MY OLD TITLE BACK.

I am boycotting GH until then.

Ok, send me the text and I'll restore it.  My apologies for not saving it; I was surprised to even see it in that field.

Not rustled, and pink stars have been prepared.

Okay I'm back.
