So finally rearranged my Phantoms cursor keys into a more comfortable arrangement, then mapped vol up, vol down, play/pause, next track and a fn key around them using the nearest DSA key symbols I could find in my collection (mostly from SP grab bag).
Reprogrammed the TMK firmware to do that as well as have mappings for power-off (fn+pause), mute (fn+vol down), stop (fn+play), prev (fn+next), menu key (fn+right win) and two special modes:
- Disable ` console key for BF4 etc (pressing fn+` disables ` key until fn tapped)
- Numeric keypad fn+scroll lock turns TKL area into a numeric keypad.
If anyone wants to copy/examine my TKL changes they're up at
https://github.com/damieng/tmk_keyboard and also include a fix for the caps/scroll light being on by default and reduces the brightness.
Next steps: Getting an aluminum housing that will cope with a full 3x5 TKL area and switching DSA retro+randoms out for a Matt3o's PBT DSA granite set which includes media keys.

Note: The blue W is so I have a notch on W to stay on my WASD cluster playing games. Oh, and that cursor key layout really is more comfortable, trust me.
