[IC] Stainless steel whiskey stones
« on: Fri, 01 February 2013, 19:42:53 »
Well, I just had epiphany. Why not make some custom whiskey stones? I've seen the ones made of soap stone, but I've heard they just chill the drink, not make it cold. I've also see the stainless ones, but they are too much for what they are. So it dawned on me, laser cut some. As far as I know, 304 stainless is food grade so......

The only constraint is that the laser guy can only cut 1/2" thick stainless. So we could do 1/2"x1/2"x1/2" or do something custom like 1"x1/2"x1/2"..... So is anyone interested?

I don't know the prices or shipping.

Hell yes I'm interested.  I have the soapstone ones right now.  They're legit, but like you said...they don't really make the drink cold.

If AKIMBRO wants them, then that's good enough for me

I'll send out a quote for some on Tuesday. Any thoughts on sizes (keep in mind the 1/2" restriction). Another thing to think of is with thicker material the laser leaves serrations so they would need to be sanded out. So I'd have a buy at GB prices or wait a bit and have me finish them.

For reals, about what size do we want these? This isn't really and IC check because I'm getting them regardless, you guys are just along for the ride. I'm not quite sure these case be cubes, but I'll ask during the quote

I'd go with 1/2"x1/2"x1/2".

The soapstone whiskey stones are only a little bigger than 1/4"x1/4"x1/4".  Sanded vs unsanded I dunno.  Since it's stainless couldn't we just throw them in a dishwasher?

I'll see if he can do cubes, that would be my preferred size as well. With the laser mark they might not look as nice. I will probably have an option to buy at GB prices and I'll ship with the laser marks. Or pay a bit more and I'll sand/finish them

You may also like the finish from a good tumbling (it'll take the nasty sharp corners off too).

Find out if he has a tumbler and his recommendations.  All kinds of media can go in one to make interesting finishes.

He doesn't have a tumbler. He only has a 4'x12' 4000 watt laser cutter and a 1 1/2 story bending machine.

Should I get one of these?:

After a bit of reading, I guess the retail stainless steels one have a gel inside them that keeps them colder longer.

Hmmm. Well couldn't hurt to try these, I'm sure freezing half inch steel cubes would keep some pretty good cold!

Can we do them in purple? :p lawl

What sort of price are you estimating? And how many to a set?

Also, 1/2" cubed is fine by me.

I might do a raw price and a finished price. raw being, you have your own equipment to finish and will be sold at GB prices. And finished, where I finish them for a fee since I do have equipment necessary to finish these (I don't think I'll be polishing them)

maybe my highschool thermodynamics is failing me, but surely how well they work in your drink is going to depend largely on the temperature you cool them to in your freezer? material/shape/size/surface area will determine the speed at which the drink will cool/stones will warm, also depending on temperature of the drink, glass and surrounding environment (and even how long you hold the drink in your hand, the surface you stand it on, insulating properties of a coaster or beer mat etc).

Also, does ice not work better because you end up consuming the cold water from melting ice along with your drink, rather than it being more effective at lowering the temperature of the actual drink? i thought the appeal of this sort of thing was that your drink isn't further diluted, rather than that they make your drink colder than ice would.

ignoring all that, i'd be in for one or two sets. I'll go buy a nice single malt now in preparation :)

I'm very interested, especially if they will work better than stones. At present I'll drop in one ice cube with 3-4 stones to my scotch or sipping rum (Zaya is the bomb) instead of 2-3 ice cubes. If stainless steel is more effective I'll take a couple sets depending on cost.

How many will come in a set?

So he got back to me. I would need 3/8" gaps between each stone + a large tab to hold them together while it cut the rest of the stones. So for a single stone, it would be quite a bit of material + time cutting them apart + finishing them.

So I doubt this is going to happen at this time. I just don't have time for it.

Maybe I can get them cut out of 304 stainless round stock. I'll be sending quotes out for the GH60 case, so I could throw this is as well since I have no means of cutting the stock myself

I would like to add that if these do end up being made you will want to use 316 grade of stainless and that is considered food grade.  I have worked in a few grain handling facilities as a union millwright and all the surfaces that anything that might be consumed by either people or animals has to be 316.  They even make a food grade anti-sieze for bolts that need it.  Plus 304 will rust a lot quicker than most people think.  Just my 2 cents though

Tempted, although I was extremely disappointed with the stone ones I got, but a metal cube can have many uses. What would be really cool is some die pips on the sides.

I didn't even have him give me a price because I'm almost positive they'd be expensive and waste quite a bit of material.

I have worked as a maintenance mechanic on food production and packing equipments. 304SS,316SS nuts like 1/2-13, 3/4-10 or your favorite metric size would make ready made stainless steel ice cubes with more surface area to dissipate the cold. They are readily available, at McMaster Carr, Grainger and specialty fastener supply houses, I think they might be worth a try.

Never rusts. Not sure how easy/cheap it would be to acquire though.
