I think you'd have to program it yourself if you wanted lighting effects or somehow locate a firmware that works for the JD40 and Teensy 2.0

JD40 does not support backlighting (well mine didn't). I don't remember if JD said that the traces were in place, but just not setup in the controller. I can't remember. In short, backlighting is not supported unless you add it (which may require some hand wiring).
