There's a very similar group buy happening right now, but I think it's already closed to new orders.  You could PM mbc about it.

I wish I had bought more Esc keys.  They look so good, I'd toss all my other Esc keys.

I finally found the Esc prototype and verified that the legend on the final keys is both thicker and larger, as expected.

Then that means we need either a .019" cutter or a metric cutter between .018" and .02". If GH buys the cutter and sends it to them do you think that they would use it WITHOUT charging an extra fee?

The answers to questions about getting new cutters will all be "no" and "really expensive".  I don't see any reason to redo the Ctrl/Alt/Shift legends.  In the name of expanding my understanding of SP and its processes, I will ask about new cutters.  But don't expect anything to come of it.

Sorry, I've been very busy with work lately.  I'd like to correct some misinformation.

Whatever we got was definitely not anything other than the 0.015" cutter.  They may have ran the cutter twice (making two identical cuts) - or just straight up the same as the prototype.  I can tell you this without even seeing the prototype.  Just look at the difference between my moogle kit and the RGB kit - it's massive.

A very quick and dirty image comparison (prototype from Melissa = white key):

[ Attachment Invalid Or Does Not Exist ] 44041[/ATTACH]

Still not convinced?  Invert the prototype image (As ripster has shown, there is a slight optical difference between the white and black legends)

But, does the 0.015" look pretty damn good? Sure it does.  I don't think anything differently needs to be done - atleast for now.

But, please, please don't be talking about a 0.019" cutter... that's just silliness! :)

The legend on the finished key is definitely bigger -- i.e., it is the new SVG that you scaled.  The width of the lines looks fatter too to me, but that is probably just an optical illusion I guess.

ripster: I guess logically it's mostly a matter of light blooming. White will bloom the most (bleeding out into the key), and conversely a white key (or even just non-black) will bloom in such a way as to bleed into the black legend.  An image with less flash (and high resolution) would be far less biased.

hashbaz: To me it's pretty concrete.  Looking at the left and right image up there, they look damn near identical.  If you go further to compare those keys to my moogle kit, the difference is astounding.

I don't have the image available now, but when I do I will post it.  I've also been quoting the wrong cutter size.  The prototype is 0.015" and the final keys are 0.018".  So the final Esc legend is both thicker and larger than the prototype.  All is well and as expected.

As for a 0.019" cutter, Melissa says they can get one but it will cost $40.

$40 is chump change. It will make the moogle 3 even more accurate than the moogle RGBY + Esc.

It's not just $40, though.  It's $40 plus $175 for new Ctrl/Alt/Shift legends (three variants of shift), which we get for free if we keep on with the 0.018" cutter.

It's definitely something to keep in mind if we ever have another reason to redo Ctrl/Alt/Shift.  The Cherry adopt-a-legend project comes to mind, if it ends up happening.

In theory yes, but we just found out that there's no volume discount for the legend fees like we had been led to believe, so I suspect a lot of people will drop one or more of their key sponsorships.

You realize we're talking about a thousandth of an inch here...

Let's think about this mathematically:

I used a 0.020" cutter for the original moogle 2 kit lettering.  0.018" should be closer to the 0.020" cutter than the 0.015" cutter, right?  In the side-by-side image comparison I made, this just isn't the case... not even close.  The original moogle 2 kit is vastly thicker than the red escape is.

I made changes to the SVG for the final Esc legend, so the final version had alterations that could definitely change the appearance versus the prototype.

Well, I'll let you do it your way since you're leading this group buys now hashbaz... but it's just not adding up right.

I'm not following ... what's not adding up?  I'm not planning on doing the 0.019" cutter.  Are you saying you think the final Esc keys were made with the 0.015" cutter?  I don't have the prototype in front of me, and I definitely concede I could have made a mistake.  But they did look thicker to me.

The Ed:  That would basically mean this whole process was all a bunch of trial and error for nothing, and my original values were correct... hmm

hashbaz:  Based on the image of the prototype vs. an image of the final red escape vs. an image of the moogle 2 kit, something isn't right.  The prototype and the final red escape thickness is far too similar.  Reread my last post for the mathematical incongruity of it.

It's also possible that they did use the 0.018" cutter for the final keys, but it skewed small due to normal precision error.  When I asked Melissa about a 0.019" cutter, she responded that it wouldn't make a real difference because there were too many variables in the physical process of creating the keys for 0.001" to make it through precisely.

.015" and .02" skewed big while .018" skewed small? Then that would mean that in another run the .018" could skew perfect with cherry?

I'll ask Melissa if she can tell for sure based on the mold, or has a record of what the actual cutter used was.  I checked the order email and I did tell her to use 0.018".  I'm beginning to think you're right though.  The SVGs I'm working on now for moogle3 are set up such that they show how thick the cutter is vs. an overlay image of the real key, and 0.018 is looking too thick.

Yes but both the cap and the shot through plastic are going to be different temperatures. And if different runs shoot different temperature plastic there could be a variance right?

Kony? You've lost me...
Reaper "frelled" me... Twice... Did he "frell" you too?... *brohug*
I'm camping for a week, and moving twice in a month. I'll get back to you when I can (If I don't then just send me another PM).

The OP is already pissed at me.

I'm not pissed at you at all.  I made a simple request, and you are free to ignore it, though obviously I think you shouldn't.

Why would I not like you? What have you ever done to piss me off?
