[IC] Dolch Green ESC
« on: Fri, 14 February 2014, 14:55:29 »
Dolch keyset owners: would you be interested in an Esc key the color of the Dolch square? I am thinking white (or possibly black) Cherry type:

If yes, how much would you be willing to pay for one? Let's assume produced by GMK.

DISCLAIMERS: I haven't run a group buy before. I haven't worked with GMK before. Given that they'd probably need a custom color for this run, it's entirely possible, even likely, that the MOQ would be ridiculous--we're only talking a single key, so even with a lot of interest we're not exactly tapping into economies of scale. That said, it may be less of a problem than I think, and/or maybe this key can be rolled into a production run for another custom set at some point. This is purely an interest check for now. If interest is strong, I will put in the time and effort to figure out the options. If any senior members want to tell me why a single key run is totally stupid/infeasible, be my guest, although productive advice would be appreciated much more. I have always liked the juxtaposition of the minimal green against the dark keys, and I think a Dolch Esc would be quite nice.

The stock color UN6037 Cyan is pretty close really with CP for the legend color so it matches Dolch set. If use stock color, you only need 250 which isn't too bad. Single key should be like $2-$3. Maybe it would be cool to do also something like Enter, WASD, cursors.

a single key is rather ridiculous shipping for international buyers.

I doubt such a 'Dolch' legend exist, so it would have to be a pad print as they are not offering to cut new legend just yet. Also there may be some trademark of the name still, in which case they may refuse it.

Thanks for the info, that's really helpful.

We could definitely expand it to include WASD, arrows, function keys, whatever y'all want. Will definitely need more interest, though. Anybody able to post this on one of the Korean forums?

A humble esc key now escalates into a full nav + esc + enter, and functions keys? There should be a sweet spot  where the quantity of caps, shipping cost, and their price is reasonable. But I think anything Dolch related always has a lot of pull at GH.

If you're doing Esc, then I would want one with white lettering and a blank one too.  Blank actually seems most appealing.

Also I would like to see this too: WASD, F5 thru F8, Arrows, Enter.

Guys, sorry I have let this lapse, have been busy with the custom carrying case project.

As I mentioned in the OP, this would be my first keycap group buy, and I'm not completely clear on GMK's MOQ requirements. I believe it's 250, but are we completely free to choose the number/selection of caps in each order? For example, does MOQ=250 mean we could do an order for 250 green esc's for a total of only 250 keycaps? Or choose 10-15 select caps per order? Or what?

Regardless, I am concerned that we're way short of 250.

Would Ivan or another experienced GB facilitator shed some light?

Talking to Ivan is probably the best bet.  I attempted to get some consensus on what to order, my proposed set is:

Esc, F5, F6, F7, F8, Arrows, Enter - 10 keys.

Yea, I do appreciate that! I will review all replies and propose a set, prob. very similar to that, if it looks like we have any hope of a successful GB. But with only 20-30ish folks interested, I'm not sure what the prospects are. I might be willing to front some of the cost, give everyone the GB price, and sell extras later. But not 200+ orders  :-X

Let's see what Ivan says. If he doesn't drop in, I will PM him.

Dolch set will be very similar in key selection as what was tried in the all grey set buy but some keys will be cut to drop that extra $20. Some of the 'fun' non essential stuff will be moved into the extras pack along with the white/cyan alternates proposed in here.

Do you think it would be possible to get just alphas of that dark grey colour? Either as an add-on for the future Dolch group buy or later as a separate one? That way whoever signs up for the Dolch group buy could get a second keycaps set by ordering the extra alphas.

Dolch set will be very similar in key selection as what was tried in the all grey set buy but some keys will be cut to drop that extra $20. Some of the 'fun' non essential stuff will be moved into the extras pack along with the white/cyan alternates proposed in here.
Curious about the odd legends on the home cluster and no text on the mods. Is that staying? I assume that's what everyone preferred in the previous IC?

Text free mods will stay as long as there is an ISO options, because 1.25 with 'shift' on it looks crazy, and having one with and one without looks bad too. If there is no text on shift, there might as well not be any text on others either. Having multiples of the same keys is dumb and not cost effective. What is weird about the nav cluster?

Sounds good on the mods, looking again it looks nice.

My bad on the nav cluster I was referring to a mockup someone put in the spacebar GB thread that I thought they had just taken from your GMK GB that fell through. Looking at your OP I see they are standard, phew. They look great. Here's what someone else posted.

Not too far away. Just need to work with GMK to try and get the base set to $100 or less without loosing anything 'essential'.

Excite!

And hope for June deadline as I have run out of money this and next months.
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

Yup, me too. I'm broke as hell at the moment but I'll always find a way to save for GMK goodies.

It's a good width!  If it's half-width it's too narrow, and full-width is too wide.

Just waiting on pricing and updated mock ups from GMK. As soon as I have them I will start up the groupbuy.
For this kit, it will have 2x variation of Esc white/cyan and cyan/dark grey, white on cyan ▲ style arrows WASD replacement, cyan on grey F J, white on cyan ANSI ISO and NP enters, 1.25 and 1x cyan on dark grey win8 keys.
There will be a Dolch base set that will be around $110, a F'n'A rows pack, and an 'odd' mods+nav pack for minila, fc660, choc mini, keycool 84, Pure Pro/Tex, Race, 5000, 1800, and etc.

No, the odd mods pack won't include any spacebar, well except for minila or JIS keyboard that use but it's actually just a normal B profile key like a shift. GMK says they don't have any spacebar profile keys smaller than 6.25 and nothing in B profile over 3. At least with Choc it's the same profile, even if it's not the same color, at least it's easier to live with on feels.

Hello i am newbine. I don't understand which you wrote

"2x variation of Esc white/cyan and cyan/dark grey" is mean ESC white on cyan & cyan on dark grey?

"white on cyan ANSI ISO" is mean white on cyan mods + nav?

What color is NP?

Can you help me ?

Thanks

So this is no longer just an IC for a cyan ESC key, right?

Now we're talking an entire dolch set? along with some other cyan-colored extras?

Either way, count me in! I could always use another GMK dolch set!  :thumb:

Just want to finally see a GMK complete key-set here.  I won't buy anymore SP rubbish until this one key-set has been accepted and made by GMK.  That is my hope and furthest desire in seeing this happen finally.  We have not had a decent all GMK key-set made for years.

Time to end our misery and dread Ivan and make sure this one gets put through GMK's molds as soon as possible  :thumb: .

I think it will make it. Even the all dark grey set came really close and I know no where as near as popular as Dolch. If we can get big Korean and Chinese keyboard forums to participate too it will be no problem for sure... might even hit into the 400 tier.

There was a Dolch group buy in Korea not too long ago and a China forum was in it too. I doubt that this group buy will get many orders from China or Korea. But it should still hit MOQ very easily.

Have not read all the thread, but are you considering to keep the mods as a separated subset?

Would love to get my hands on a Dolch set (though it does seem pretty pricey)

Any info on what sort of profiles they'll come in?

I know you mentioned it earlier but I don't see it in the mock-ups, could a spacebar-only addon be added?

I'm in for a color pack, that looks sexy and would probably go with a lot of different sets.
It's a good width!  If it's half-width it's too narrow, and full-width is too wide.

Blank Windows keys... because I am tired of endless debate about which style logo and better for Apple/NIX user.
Yes there will be extra spacebar... no need for a mock up of spacebar. There may also be EDOX add on... maybe a blank 37 set or something like this if the price isn't stupid.

For the base set I assume 104 keys + the ANSI & tsangan add ons right.

Do you think colour pack windows key will look alright with the base set tho..  :-X

Base should be something like $110. I don't have final price for the other yet. Should not be too high though... well maybe the ODD pack will be more pricy as there is lot of keys there.

The first thing which i want talk. This is big group buy with too much options. It is almost fit all layout which i know :). But i hope you 'll add Ergodox pack later. But i already don't like color pack. It seems not fit dolch, sorry but i just say thing i think :(. And in 3 pack: Base, Fn, Odd; i have seen more key is same same. That can effect MOQ? I see why you make mock up like this. It is good for odd order but it make confuse for people wanna order more than or equal 2 in 3 that pack. That is all thing i feel when i see your mock up. Anyway thanks your effort :thumb:

In additonal, 110 is great price for base set. I think i 'll go to base,fn,odd :)

I thought the shift keys would actually say "shift" on them.

The originative dolch gb had the shift text on them.

They do when the other modifiers have text, but notice tab, caps lock, enter, backspace are symbol only.

For ISO user, 'shift' is a problem because it doesn't fit well on 1.25 key... and also the arrow alignment is different on text and no text for whatever reason so even then it would mismatch. Other mods also then don't have text so it is more uniform.

What keys are same in each packs? Only duplicate key is extra 2.25 shift in ODD pack for FC660. F'n'A have same legend... appear to be redundant but it have different row profiles F and A like original 1000 set.

Modern sets use double E and double B instead which is what BASE configuration.

Mock ups are not 100% color accurate... also that picture is Dolch alpha with SP black Cherryesque font modifiers so it's not even the same thing.
Color pack F J will have homing bar, it's something different to have.

Long shot but any chance of getting blanks as well as the Dolch set windows key? :| I know people will argue and all. Maybe add it in the colour packs? Cause most of the people wants a full Dolch set I assume.
