The Winner: BunnyLake!

Thanks for playing, everyone! All really great submissions! Keep an eye out for future contests here!

RULES:

1. Explain to me (in this thread) why you love Topre. I want to hear a creative and interesting reason you have found oneness with cup rubber. How does it make you feel to type with a Topre keyboard? (It's pretty corny, I KNOW!)
2. I will pick 5 of my favorite, and random between them.
3. This is a giveaway, no money is required. Just creativity :)
4. Entries will end on Friday at 9pm Pacific Standard Time

The Loot:

Solid Brass Topre BroBot V2

This is a prototype for future material types. It is a prototype, but fully functional!

Good luck, and have fun! I am looking forward to hearing your stories!

I don't have a Topre.  Maybe someday I will, actually I probably will someday.  I just want this caps because I ****ing love BroBots V2's.  I want to be the jcrouse of these damn things.  I want them all.  One day I will find my oneness with the cup rubber, maybe tomorrow, maybe next month, but for now, I need to feel the oneness of the BroBot.

I don't have a Topre board, but my wife does. Her keyboard and keycap collection is bigger than mine, yet I do all the legwork/posting on here. Help me win more points with my wife by giving me cup rubber brobot, please. :D

EDIT: It may get me sex.

I love my topre that's the switch I prefer
Type so fast with topre my words tend to blur
When I first started out, in another words, as a young nerd
I wanted the best so I searched and searched
I was advised, recommended and then referred
All direction point me to topre
Finally got one, became a fan and now I'm on my third
And that's how the oneness with the cup rubber was forever transferred

Short (cause I'm already in bed and half sleeping): It feels like heaven. :) Typing on fluffy clouds that make you feel comfortable. I'm writing my master thesis on a hhkb and sometimes can't stop writing, cause stopping means no more thock thock. :D

Now, I really need sleep. Damn geekhack, steeling money and sleep.

How have I found oneness with cup rubber?

I assimilated with cup rubber thanks to the fantastically generous BunnyLake and his recent raffle, in which I won a Topre Realforce 87U, donated to the raffle by the equally generous and amazing Goobus.

I have had this keyboard for all of a week and a half and it is already incredibly special to me. Not only does it remind me of how fantastic this community is, but by god does it feel amazing! If mechanical key switches are royalty, then Topre is King. And he is a good, kind and caring King. Those who serve him are rewarded with the feeling of typing on a cloud of supple boobs, and complete oneness with cup rubber.

Every King needs a crown though. A solid crown. An expertly crafted crown. Made of Brass. Made special. And made by Bro Caps.

Topre is my king and Topre is my Bro.

ok, here is my entey: (at the risk of sounding like a creep :P)

Oh Topre, how I love you so much. You make my fingers feel like magic. Pushing your buttons makes music to my ears. I love the feeling I get when ever I walk into my room and I see you there, just waiting, wanting to be touched. When I'm feeling down you always bring me up, when I have long papers to type, you always make it easy. You are perfect, and there is nothing I would ever change about you (except maybe a shiny new BroBot ;D ). I don't just want you Topre, I NEED you! You complete me. I know that as long as I have you here, every thing will be ok, and nothing would make me happier than typing on you for the rest of my days. I love you, always and forever.

I think an important but overlooked part of the Topre experience is the sliders.  Forget the cupped rubber, the stability of the switches are what make the boards feel graceful and solid.  Cherry MX switches actually have a lot of play.  The big round plastic sliders in the Topre switches offer smooth travel and amazing lateral stability.  People who don't own Topre may not even realize this, but the only stabilized key on a Realforce is the space bar.  The backspace, enter, and shift keys don't have any.  The thick round stems are plenty to keep them actuating correctly.

I recently tried Topre after trying Cherry MX Browns, Reds, Blues, Blacks and Ergo Clears. A month ago I scored a nice price on a used Topre board from the classifieds, the Leopold FC660C. Since then, I've fallen in love with it because of the way the key bounces back on my tip after each stroke as I finger the board. I'm stroking it and stroking it and finally.. I come to the conclusion of my post. I am one with the cup rubber.

10 things I hate about Topre

I hate the way you thock to me,

and the way you cut your domes.

I hate the way you drive my fingers,

I hate it when you're home.

I hate your big dumb fold out feet

and the way you're only 45g.

I hate you so much it makes me dipswtich,

it even makes me enter Brocaps giveaways...

I hate the way you’re always slipping,

I hate it when you fry.

I hate it when you make me typo,

even worse when you make me try.

I hate it when you’re not around,

and the fact that you cost so much.

But mostly I hate the way I don’t hate you,

not even close…

not even a little bit…

not even a touch.

Topre is like a Tim Burton or Wes Anderson movie.  There's something horribly wrong, painfully trite, and just overdone about it, but at the same time, you get sucked in and can't look away.  You know it's going to feel a certain way, but as you touch it, it transforms itself into something better, where something that's wrong and that shouldn't work suddenly feels right.  You try and fight it, try and hate its parts, but the more you do so, the more you realize how right it is in spite of the horrible horrible parts its composed of.  Somehow that meshing of things that just shouldn't feel good blends together perfectly and makes something amazing.  At the end, you wonder how you could have ever doubted it.

Cool giveaway. Hopefully it undermines all the CC drama today.

I sold all my MX stuff after my conversion to the oneness with the cup rubber. The 55g Topre switch is perfect, especially with the dental band silencing mod. I really enjoy the thock with each keystroke -- one that cannot be replicated by any of the various MX switches I've tried. I feel that if people give Topre a chance with either 45g or 55g uniform, they will be enlightened with the rubber cup goodness and sell their antiquated MX gear. Everyone I know that has played around with the various MX boards I used to have and now the 55g 87U says that "this one" (referring to Topre) feels the best. I am doing my fair share in enlightening the masses of our new Topre overlords.

I'm addicted to Topre because of the silicon-like smoothness of the sliders.  Not even my best MX lube job can replicate the silky smooth thockety goodness of Topre.  A reluctant convert, I am.

From urbandictionary,

2. (Brit. English) an eraser
1. How did I run out of rubbers so fast?
2. Any of you blokes got a rubber? This number 3 pencil is too dark.

Topre is a damn cool switch. It's one of those things where the concept of the thing is simple but in reality it's quite complex but really awesome at the same time in terms of feel. I never really understood why there was a learning curve for MX because the switches felt so different from the rubber domes I've always typed on. It's just something that felt a bit weird to me no matter how much I used it. Topre went back to basics for me with the general feel of rubber domes but refined it by being the same, but oh-so different at the same time, kind of like turning carbon into diamonds. In the end, this was really just what I was looking for when I initially started looking for a great keyboard, I just didn't know it.

Thock.

I like my white HHKB for two reasons.

1) I love the solid feel of the board and how the HHKB topre domes with capacitive switches make for one of the smoothest actuations of any switch. Capacitive switches are interesting in that the method in which they reach the actuation point is just for fun. In this case you know they created those rubber domes for maximum comfort.

2) Eiiti Wada - Had a brilliant vision when it came to designing a 60 key layout that just works.

What I think makes Topre stand out is the combination of its technology coupled with the soft feel. Indeed it feels quite nice, but the idea of how the switch was designed and how it works I think is the most intriguing part to me - the bump occurring right as the capacitive actuation occurs, while retaining the ability to continue depressing afterwards, like other mechanical switch types, all the way into a pillowy bottom-out.

My Realforce is a real joy to type on - keystrokes just feel really very solid and tactile while retaining the rubber softness. I like the aesthetics of my blank Type-S, but a big point was that it made me fully buy into 60% form factors and the homerow Ctrl positioning.

But the most honest reason I love Topre is because I love all keyboards! (Folks at the DSA Retro sorting party a few months back laughed when I legitimately said I liked Cherry MY.) I've got an F and a foam & foil BTC 5100C - both capacitive as well, both of which are extremely interesting to me for reasons both alike and different - and several other switch types and form factors. It's just really terrific to be able to rotate through my collection and enjoy them all, for the feeling and for the science behind them, considering most of my time (what I do for a living and what I do as hobbies) is spent sitting at a computer.

[On a side note about this contest, I'll be very surprised if AKiMBO didn't win.]

My english is not good. I have to thanks to the help of google translate

I love topre because topre give me a sense of like fingers dancing on the keyboard, I feel fingers like have s*x with keyboard (HHKB), I can surf the on them . Pressing force it perfect, the most is HHKB. And the important, I like mounting CC skull, Brobot on the HHKB, and I could watch them for hours, I see them all the beauty of CC skull and brobot. With me, pressing force of HHKB is the most wonderful, it's give my fingers to feel comfortable and relaxed. I can not find it on the amazing with switch MX

Each press is like slipping my fingers in to miniature condoms. Keyboard scented condoms of joy at that. Not ribbed, just silky smooth rubber goodness to feel au naturale.

Of course, why else would I be doing this but to prepare for an orgasmic experience with the outright sexiest switch? Preparation is key, and it's going to feel gooood...

My relationship with Topre is like the relationship between P!nk and Carey Hart.

I must love Topre to keep coming back to it, after pushing it away.

I buy a black HHKB to try. I decide I want a white one. I sell the black one and buy the white one. Pimp out the white one; sell it to Bro Caps. Buy HHKB Pro JP for the arrows. Buy JIS layout RF caps. Win Glissant keyboard aesthetic contest. Sell HHKB Pro JP because I never used it. Buy RF 10th AE from demik. Sell RF 10th AE. Stay out of Topre game. Trade for 2x HHKB Pro 2 (current status).

At first, I was like, "meh, they just feel like super smooth rubber domes." But I really started to like the HHKB layout. Designed and built some MX keyboards so that I could use that layout. Pretty happy, but not quite satisfied. Sometimes you just want the keyboard to SHUT THE **** UP, you know what I mean? So HHKB Type-S. :) No rattle, just THOCK.

Anyway, if the HHKB can get me to come back to it, after feeling meh about Topre in general, then it must be love. :D

Edit: anyone who says PBT are super textured and grippy must be smoking crack. These keys are slippery as hell! :))

Topre was my first "good" keyboard.
its what i learnt to type more the 50 wpm on.
its why i found GH and learnt about all the sick disgusting habits, like drooling over clasks and gasmasks, that i have now fell in love with <3.
it lead me to my HHKB my first 60% which now makes every other keyboard feel weird and huge.

Topre makes my fingers happy.

When i wake up in the morning, I always be sure to press a couple of keys on my keyboard just to feel oneness with cup rubber at the start of my day.

The feeling is indescribable.

Topre can not be explained, it can only be experienced.

Topre requires a certain sophistication to understand.

You will fall head over heels in love with your HHKB. So don't worry about the price.

The BrassBot is outstanding looking Bro.
It would always have a home on my HHKB.

I have not been able to find any other switch that comes close to the feel of Topre. For me, "oneness with cup rubber" is the unique feel I get every time I use my HHKB.
The other amazing thing about Topre is how quite is it while still being clicky. I can use my HHKB anywhere and the only distraction is the pink keycaps, not the sound.  ;)

I just got my first Topre board and my beloved Filco has not been used since.  Hmmm, not sure that counts towards why I love it...

The typing feel on this thing is amazing.  It really feels like my fingers are typing on a trampoline.  Each keystroke feels supported all the way down and back up.  Its just so smooth and refined...

This thing makes me feel high class.  Like I should be buying $500 bottles of wine...

At church I was told that to pray is to love
But what praying is to God, is what Topre is to Love.

At first I was like "whats the point of rubber dome"
I thought I wouldn't even feel a thing with the rubber on
Plus why the switch to something new when there was nothing wrong?
..But when my shaft made contact it felt like there was nothing on

And it was pure bliss.

I guess it was kind of scary..
Cause under those sheet I was sure there was a Cherry..

But lo and behold, I popped off a key, and all I could see was the PCB
And as a result, I had nothing to say,
But that was the day I converted to Topre.

Just wanted to add that the brass BroBot is not in its final form. That's it's roughest stage. I am buffing and polishing it to a smooth, glossy and shiny finish :)

I will update the pics soon-ish.

But....but.....some people like it rough :o

I will leave it semi-rough :P

I honestly don't have a Topre. But if I were to get this, I would buy a Topre in a heartbeat. :P

I love topre because it's everything that should be in a keyboard switch, I find cherry switches to be a little "to mechanical" and even though they can be very nice when modded topre is just so different.

Top actuation, sound keycaps even force(45g HHKB).

I've even started getting used to the layout lol. Thats why I'm gonna write a little tribute to me typing on topre switches.

I all started one saturday, I was casually strolling around the house when I heard something at the door. I thought to myself meh probably something unimportant. I slowly opened the door as I had just awoken moments earlier and before me was a guy with a package in his hand, I signed for it and as soon as he left I started ripping the package open from every angle and found a box inside. It stated in white letters HHKB Professional 2. I slowly exctracted the relic inside. At first I just touched it, felt it and held it in my hand.
I found the texture on the keycaps astonishing.

I finally actually pressed a switch without plugging it in. The excitement shivered through my fingers as I felt the suction of the rubber cup collapsing. I started pressing more keys, the felt so responsive and friendly compared to Cherry. It was kind of rough sex with a random drunk girl versus emotional sweaty awesome fun sex.

And thats my first topre experience.

I've been using keyboards for a long time. Before keyboards it was controllers for game systems, and before that it was crayons. Going back even further was boobs for my little baby hands to squeeze and suck the sweet life giving nectar from. Often hearing about Topre for ages and how they felt like typing on boobs I knew there must be something to it. Like every serial killer already knew: eventually fantasizing just doesn't do it for you anymore. Also living by the mantra: "Never half-ass two things. Whole-ass one thing." I decided to jump in full bore and purchased my first Topre 45g. When it arrived I was in love. This experience taught me that MX Reds are just lying about being a cloud of boobs.

Shortly after that my wallet was sucked open and I ordered an aluminum case for my baby. Now a black hole has opened sucking in my MX CCs and spitting them out of a white hole as Topre CCs. The Topre future looks bright and all of my keyboards BT (Before Topre) were a mistake.

In conclusion, I started as a baby with boobs, graduated to controllers and eventually keyboards as a boy, and have now emerged a man typing on Topre boobs. So this is why I love Topre, because Topre has turned me into a man. A man with needs for more manly things like metal keyboard keys.......and a new quest......to finger something... (the next best Topre typing experience obviously)

im not sure whether to leave my sumission the way it is or write something cheesy like everyone else

i guess just add this to a ps to my other response

looking around me, i can count over 20 keyboards, and that just whats within eyesite, 5 of which, i have never even plugged in, let alone typed on, i spend a ton of time popping various cap sets on mx boards, trying to trick myself into using them again, but the only board that i have typed on for more than 30 seconds since i got my type s is my type s, and prior to that, the only board i used was my pro 2, i have thousands of dollars of mx boards here right now basically on display, but if my hhkbs went missing, i would trade them all(minus a couple gifts) for just one hhkb

right now if you cut me i would bleed grey and white, and if you cut deep enough, you could see my modded purple plungers

ps, no matter what anyone else says, i can promise you nobody wants this more than i do

If it was a vote I think myself and everyone else would probably choose you as the most deserving recipient of the Brass BroBot V2. I'm quite positive you'll be in the elected 5 and I hope you survive the RNG battle to hoist this bad boy on top of the mountain. Your Topreness resonates across the forum.

You never fail to amaze me.

You could then go on to get a CC tattoo and follow in Imersa's footsteps. See if you get a nice exclusive CC. :D

Then again, I only wish I was insane enough to have ink needles put in me for keycaps. :D

Well, even though I missed the entry deadline, there is no time limit on my love of Topre, so I guess I will tell you all why I love Topre anyway.

There are so many reasons.  But I will limit myself to just two.

First, the Technical Reason:

Topre’s electrostatic capacitance switching is superior technology to mechanical switching.  An electrostatic capacitive switch does not use a physical metal part to make the electrical connection, instead the electrical connection is made by capacitance.  Topre capacitive switches do not physically complete an electric circuit like most other keyboard technologies.  Instead, electric current constantly flows through all parts of the key matrix.  Each key is spring-loaded and has a tiny plate attached to the bottom of it.  When you press a key, you do the work of moving the tiny top plate closer to the larger plate below it.  As the gap between the two plates decreases, the capacitance increases, and the amount of current flowing through the matrix changes.  The micro-processor in the keyboard detects the change in voltage and interprets it as a key press for that location.

Because there is no physical contact, capacitive switch keyboards have a longer life than any other mechanical keyboard.  Also, capacitive switch keyboards do not have problems with signal bounce since the two surfaces never come into physical contact.  Signal bounce is a real problem if you want an electronic circuit with fast response time.  Contact bounce can produce very noticeable and undesired effects.

Second, the Spiritual Reason:

Well, once I was lost, but now am I am found.  I was once rattled by the disturbing sound of a thousand lost keystrokes, first clicky, then gritty, then smooth but bottoming out unpleasantly.  Finally, I found Topre.  Now I am happy.  Now I know what Epicurus meant when he shouted “ataraxia”* in his bathtub.  (or was that Pythogoras who said “eureka”?)  Well, w/e, I found atarxia, inner tranqulity and oneness with cup rubber.  Topre is about spiritual awakening.  About self discovery, raised consciousness, and ultimately, it’s about enlightenment.

* The aim of life is not the positive pursuit of pleasure but rather the absence of pain, a neutral state Epicurus called “ataraxia,” which is freedom from all worry, often translated simply as “inner tranquility.”  The happiness of ataraxia is not a private affair: Epicurus taught that it can be more readily achieved in a society where like-minded individuals band together to help inspire one another’s pursuit of happiness and oneness of cup rubber.

It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada
