Making your own pcbs
« on: Sun, 12 October 2014, 13:16:01 »
Who has done this with their customs?

While our pcb' are big and cost a lot when they charge by the square inch it doesn't seem like it would be outrageous just to make a couple myself using one of the various diy recipes.

Probably cheaper to buy a gon for $50 once consumables are accounted for but a truly custom pcb would be a lot simpler than boards designed to try to please  the entire planet.

So....  Who has done this?   What is your preferred method,  and what is likely to bite me in the assignment if I go down this road?

There's 2 common ways to DIY PCBs. One is to use chemically etch off the copper and the other is to grind it off with a PCB mill machine. I was thinking about getting one of #2 to help out with the hacking, since I think it's a good option.

You just mill through the copper layer and drill through holes for the leads. You will have to drill through holes anyway if you etch so why not?

it also wont have sodlermask on it so it'll look bare like this guy's

I certainly won't be buying a milling machine
