quick poll.  Gonna cast more caps... but what molds to make?  I've got an MX to decide on.  Earl Esc, Grizzle-key Bear, or Comedy?

which sold out the fastest on techkeys.us ?

technically only one of these appeared on techkeys.us, that was comedy and tragedy.  Only going to be doing comedy these days... tragedy is unfortunately too dark for a bunch of people.

But a human skull isn't? Kids these days

The running joke is that I'm too new to be ranked Captain (CPT) so moose demoted me in another thread to Cadet (CDT). Sifo doesn't understand military ranks and just wants me to be called ****ing new guy (FNG).

Dog: The mint choco bears/hand are a really puzzling thing.  They aren't really something I'd put my name on because of how they did not mold correctly... but on the same token I freaking love them for coming out as well as they have.

Multi color and I have not done very well together.  I'm not sure what it is or why it happens that way but it just never turns out quite right :(

Anyone who got some of my perfect 2 color caps are very lucky.  Out of several attempts I've only ever had one set come out correctly...

Yesterday, communistwitchdr had approached me with an idea.

He called it,

Quote
U-cap.  The concept is that a person would send a
face of some sort: animal, human, or robot. A caricature would be sculpted
based off of the photo on a key of the buyer's choice.

Now- I took the idea and ran with it.  The key would be cast up to 10 times or until the mold breaks in the colors of the person's choosing.

In the end the recipient would have at most 10 keys of the master caricature, and they would get the mold it was made in.  The mold would be signed, and an accompanying note would contain details as to the date the key was made and color.

I'm not terribly fond of this because of the workload, and so it would not be cheap.  I've considered doing more sculpts in addition to casting, but honestly they both take up so much time >.<  Getting the custom sculpt cap orders complete has not been easy.  They just take up GOBS of time. Time which is simultaneously being taxed trying to keep my supplies from expiring and refining my casting/mold making techniques.

I've made a new kind of mold technique which should increase the longevity of each mold I produce.  The only byproduct is about 2 hours of prep for each stage of the mold.  But if a mold can last for 20-30 casts before breaking it would be worth it.

That's all there is for today.  U-cap? New mold techniques.  Yup :)

Hey Binge, if you're up for it, you could also do custom caps for people by instead of taking an idea and producing the master yourself, have people send you the master and then you create the mold and casts from it.

(PS. Thread lurker here, your caps are awesome!)

Ah I know what you're saying and it makes perfect sense.  What I was suggesting would be more of a services rendered type deal rather than a commission of artistry however.  (Not to say that doing the molding and casting itself isn't an art, it certainly is!)

Regardless, love the caps, and I look forward to seeing what you cast up next!

Yeah I've taken the time since your first post considering the option, and I've decided that unless the right person comes around with the right attitude and expectations I simply would not offer this sort of service.

They take 30+ hours to complete with how far I take them. Not a good way to keep a home life intact. They are still not all done :-( making cast caps was always the goal.

That is almost an excuse to get a camo Filco!
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

I think this is probably one of the nicest pictures I've ever been able to take... so sharp.

Ray's cap on the left.

This :)) totally.

I've decided to remake the MX moose into a V3.  V2 moose will still be around unit the mold breaks, but here's a comparison shot.
