A presentation on retrobrite would have been really cool. I've never done it and I'm leary about chemicals and plastics..

You just have to know what chemicals a given plastic is soluble in.  And then don't put it in that chemical.  xD

I was going to touch on that briefly in my presentation.   :p

brad mentioned that he needs to start planning for spring keycon midwest. i agree, and will be there as usual to help. we had some definitely avoidable technical difficulties at this keycon that we should very much squash before the next one.

it's a topic that seems to never go away

That would be hard to do since everyone seems to have their own recipe and preferred way of doing it.  For example, I do straight peroxide, no oxy, to avoid bloom.

This talk should also be prefaced with a talk with what retrobrighting does to plastic and how it damages it, so do at your own risk.

Could get one yellow keyboard, divide the keycaps between all the competitors, and see whose method works the best.
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

I think this would be a great presentation at the next 'Con.  Some great visuals would be examples of caps done with varying popular recipes and have some examples of bloom, as I have no idea what exactly this is.

What about demonstrations on making keycaps using CAD programs and a little bit of info about the protocol for using 3D printers especially on tolerance and how it affects cost! I would but I don't know if anyone else knows more than me :P I'm sure they do. I mention this because I'm ok with using Inventor and it's pretty intuitive, but I can't seem to be able to make organic shapes, only linear.
