A keyset inspired by some of the first portable laptops.
I’m very excited to post my Interest Check for GMK 1520!

GMK 1520 will use UV printing as well as double shot ABS.

Inspiration
This set was inspired by some of the first clamshell laptops that paved the way for the ultralight laptops we have today.

Note on colours: These colours will be displayed differently on different displays, however I do have physical samples and have attempted to match my renders to their appearance below.

Looks like a really nice set, it would be more appealing for me to have a more international friendly kit though (UK ISO) otherwise it's a no from me. GLWIC

Consider N5 or TU2 from GMK color palette instead of RAL, that way the price will be as low as possible

I think you should move the black F11, F12, F13 keys to the Extension kit. They don't seem to serve any purpose in the base kit, other than being a throwback to the black Ins, Del keys on the original board, but I don't think that translates well to this set.

Consider adding a 1u Alt and two 1.5u System keys to the Extension kit, for Mac and OG HHKB bottom row support.

I'm here for the dual 3u bars and 3-key 40's in base.

Curious though, what's the reasoning for choosing GMK?

I'm a sucker for some retro source material, and nothing is cooler than the Gridcase 1520. I'll be picking this set up 100%.

Haven't gone through with a fine comb yet, but overall the subs look pretty faithful to the original. Here's a better image of source inspo for the curious

Can I ask why you're going with UV printing though. I'm pretty sure this could be double triple shot, unless the cost of mixing colors is prohibitive?

2 different color legends would make the entire keycap tripleshot, which GMK does not do, but JTK and Domikey might be able to.

The WoB would be doubleshot, and the extra color would be UV or pad printed.

Aight after simmering on this a bit I feel like the base kit has almost too much to offer, and I'd love to see this as fleshed out as possible since I love the set so much.

- 3 key is always appreciated, but I'm not too sure how useful it would be in this set. If you're using a 4 row keyboard you'd be cutting off the numpad sublegends, which doesn't really make much sense for the theming this has going for it. I'm not entirely sure if there's a solution to this and still include 40s support.

- The extra F11, F12, and F13 keys in base are really odd, maybe you could render the purpose for those?

- I personally always feel like alice B in base without the bars is odd. Either have the split bars in base or move the extra B to bars kit.

- There's so many possibilities for some fun child kits. One especially would be a macro kit imo.

Eons ago, there was an interest check for a keycap set based on a laptop. I think it was something related to a machine used in the first missions to the moon by NASA. This set made me recalled it; although, it never came to the GB phase, as long as I can remember.

Sounds like you're talking about GMK Azimuth which as based off the Grid Compass

Interesting to see that thread go through the same line of thought this is going through, namely around GMK pad vs JTK shot.

Fingers crossed we can get it over the line this time  :thumb:

Alright first, love this set.

- 3 key is always appreciated, but I'm not too sure how useful it would be in this set. - There's so many possibilities for some fun child kits. One especially would be a macro kit imo.

I'm not sure that there would be a cost effective solution to 40s, but considering the full potential of this set seems to be on tkl's and larger, I don't necessarily see this as an issue.
I think that the extra black F11, F12, and F13 keys serve two functions; first, to continue the aesthetic of the original laptop which only has up to F10, and second, to be used with the black F1-F10 in the addons for either macros or a full black f-row.
Fully agree with you on alice kitting

Additionally, I think that this set would benefit from a ╎\ winkey like there is on the original gridcase, it would tie in very nicely.
Also consider adding the same boxes from the 1.5u fn key to the 1u fn key

What's this? GMK 1520? Sounds like the medieval version of 9009.

Wait, what? Actual sublegends that aren't Japanese? And they come in different colors?

Side note : Yellow is underrated and very good

The []FN[] key is really really cool looking. It makes me want a similarly vintage | Return ↲ | key.
I know it would drive the cost up and what you have at the moment seems the most bang for the buck.

Hey All! Thanks for all the kind words everybody, it's much appreciated.

nice!

reminds me of GMK AZiMUTH (also in IC stage) https://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=81016.0

I found GMK AZiMUTH and the similarities with my set during the designing phase, however ignored it due to both the user and thread being inactive for 2ish years.

There will also be many kitting changes in the future, thanks all for pointing out problems and oversights.

I know people like the fonts and premium-ness of GMK (as well as the long queue perhaps) - but have you consider implementing this set with the triple-shot ABS tech of JTK?
I really like these colors to be all injected instead of printed - been following this colorway since IC of GMK AZiMUTH

Moving some space bars to the base and leaving others in the spacebar kit is kind of weird too.

Where you draw the line is the fun part of kitting, though, so I'm sure you could make a convincing argument in either direction.

I decided to keep the extra B in base in order to keep the spacebar kit cheaper and not add two extra colours to the spacebar kit.
Unfortunately I don't think I'll have alice bars in base as I already have 2.25u and 2.75u shift keys that can be used instead.
