Title: [IC] LZ-GH Keyboard
Post by: boost on Tue, 15 January 2013, 09:32:38
Who want's a LZ(LifeZone) keyboard?

After some talks with LZ and the other members over at KBD, looks like GH will have a LZ-GH.

'Fill out my form, it's all there'  (oh yeah:  keyboard!)
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/viewform?formkey=dEY2VGVUdFVkT0dRWE9tbTh0QWxLeGc6MQ

I know this is lacking information, but this is just a IC to see what keyboard layout the GH members what. Will keep the IC open for a few weeks and update this thread when I get new information form LZ or RedLine Members.

Some things that might be of interest to everyone might be: quantity available and price estimate. I know these are usually limited batches with high price tags.

Post by: NikoGasm on Tue, 15 January 2013, 10:48:25
I think I'd be willing to pay around the $400 range. The only problem will be if there's a CC-esque amount available. I missed out on the most recent Clack sale because of the drawing system they did, despite that I camped out every night for like a week just refreshing the page so I wouldn't miss it. I really don't want the same sort of deal to happen with the LZ-GH.
Title: Re: [IC] LZ-GH Keyboard
Post by: Acetrak on Tue, 15 January 2013, 10:57:26
It's difficult to meet the demand if there's a limited supply, I don't think there are many ways around it. The lotto for CC's was so that people that are at a disadvantage (e.g. people with high latency so they can't camp sites efficiently etc.) will have an equal chance compare to everyone else. But at the end of the day, these decisions are made by the seller regardless of how fair the buyers deem these methods.
Title: Re: [IC] LZ-GH Keyboard
Post by: jdcarpe on Tue, 15 January 2013, 11:02:52
I don't see why this wouldn't be like any other keyboard group buy. Buyers place their orders, pay the invoice, then wait for the products to be produced and shipped.

Unless LZ doesn't operate that way.
Title: Re: [IC] LZ-GH Keyboard
Post by: NikoGasm on Tue, 15 January 2013, 11:03:16
Oh, the sale was by all means fair to everyone, and probably the best method to evenly distribute the CC's. It just sucked spending all that time for no reason.

Oh yes, I realize this is just the IC. Buy if one final design is chosen from the most popular selections, I would think it would proceed as a normal group buy. Not being limited to a certain number of total orders, I mean. But again, I'm not familiar with how LZ runs his buys.

What's the difference between full-plate and half-plate?
half plate is preferred to be used with tactile switches while a full plate is for linear switches, that's not to say you can't use whatever switch with either plate
Title: Re: [IC] LZ-GH Keyboard
Post by: alaricljs on Tue, 15 January 2013, 14:01:55
And the difference in the plate itself is that half plate has no plate surrounding the alpha-numeric switches.

Is it like a general consensus  that the half plate is better for tactile switches or is it more like some people prefer the half plate and some prefer the full plate, just like some people prefer a switch and some prefer another?

Half plate? With new plate designs, you can open the switch without desoldering all the switches and removing the plate from the PCB.

From what I just read, it's not to be able to mod the switch, but for the feel when typing.

Yep, and I hate the feel of typing on a PCB-mounted switch vs. a plate mounted switch. Why anyone would prefer it the other way is beyond me.

I have to agree with jdcarpe there is a solid feel to typing on a plate, where the PCB bottom out doesn't feel as nice.

I see that it has a detachable USB cable for example.
Is it programmable?
Any function layer stuff?

Or is this mostly about the cool case and custom status?

This is probably the fairest opportunity you will get. I would assume boost would be going by the timestamps on his interest check form, and I would also assume a lot of people will drop their position once price is announced. So this should be a pretty fair sale :)

The other part of this sale, 50 boards. I believe that's more than ever offered at once to us. And once these come out, I wouldn't be surprised to see people selling off a different Korean custom for this one.
Hence yea, probably best chance to get a Korean custom.

I have never seen a limited GB do that, but I guess anything is possible. Frankly I expect everyone who wants one and has $400 they are willing to spend will probably get one, Unless everyone here is expecting to pay that much lol. Keyboards be crazy these days!

I think the thing that draws me to this keyboard the most is the fact that it is a GH specific version, and the fact that it is based on the LZ-S which would mean it should have the Bar foot as well.

Anyways I am sure it will work out, if not for this one then another later I am just pleased that the flow of Korean keyboards is finally starting to drip on us :P . So good luck to everyone :)

I see my one coworker once or twice every couple months.  He's a cool guy, so no beat-down necessary.  I've worked on a couple LZ-S's and don't like the weight, also the angle is too steep.  I'd have to come up with some other foot arrangement for my angle preference, and that's a little easier with KMAC style feet.

I think bar feet means that the component that raises the keyboard will be a steel bar design. As you can see in the second picture of this page (taken from DangWang's blog site, hope you don't mind) http://dangwang.wordpress.com/2012/11/16/420-reviews-lz-mx-mini-by-lifezone/

1.5x the size of a regular alpha keys. This means the modifier keys on the bottom row will be wider than the ones on the average Filco (which are known as 1.25 mods). The 1.5 mod bottom row set up will require a 7x space bar.

@boost heavier boards huh? I guessing the weight is coming From the brass? ;)

boost do you know yet in what ways the case and plate will be "modified?" will it be more significant than putting a GH where the S was?

The weight increase is one thing. The LZ-S is 3.3ish lb and LZ-GH is 5lbs

other then that, I don't know.
nice the heavier the better in my book

Yes it is, but there are other keyboards that are heavier tho...
then tell them it needs to be heavier :P

I realize what they are, I should have been more specific.

Is that correct and if so why?
Who makes key caps for a setup like this? I just came out of a situation where the keyboard used oddball keys, making replacement a hassle.

1.5x mods and 7x spacebar are a throwback to vintage Cherry winkeyless keyboards. You can still use those keysets on modern boards, if they are Korean. :)

Edit: Yes, the "tsangan kit" or 13-key add-on is for compatibility with these keyboards.

You know, I'm kinda glad someone agrees with me on this.  I see this IC go up and think "Oh, they'll base number of units to build off of this, good job specialty keyboard maker" and then it's "Only 50 will be made" and I'm now "Why is this a thread, then?"

You have no idea where the machine time is coming from.  Maybe it's a busy shop that allows 'whomever' machine time for cheap for short runs?  On the other hand the traditional reason for small runs of Korean boards is the lack of space for staging packaging and shipping.

I totally went dyslexic and read "time machine" and got confused.

^ Yup  and isn't there going to be a second run or something?

Then, why not take this IC as what it should be meant for and go "Ok, there's enough interest to build 84.3 of these, we'll do it in two runs of 42.15, who can wait an extra month?"  instead of trying to artificially inflate rareness by telling almost 85 people that only 50 will be made, even though you have plans for a second run.

Yeah, but with a fully programmable board, why can't a 84/86 key layout have a win/super key for those that want it?

I was simply commenting on how people who find the Windows key is useless should learn its many useful features. "Winkeyless" is almost more of a fad than a reasonable configuration except for those that are trying to use old keycap sets with them, which is a fine motivation. I could also understand it for people who are hardcore gamers for whom pressing the Windows key by mistake is a big deal.

For example, how do you launch your programs in Windows? Most people probably use their mouse and either single click on the programs pinned to their start bar, double click a shortcut on their desktop, or click on the start menu button and navigate to the program they want. If you use the Windows key, Win+# will launch the #th thing on your start bar and pressing Win then just typing will search for programs, files and menus. For example, if you press Win then type "fire" you can probably press Enter and you'll launch Firefox without having to use your mouse. While Ctrl+Esc can simulate a Win click, you can't combine it with any other keys, e.g. Ctrl+Esc+# won't simulate Win+#.

I use Alt-Tab and Launchy.... Win-Keyless is 'popular' because of vintage Cherry DS popularity.

Now there is GMK, we can all join the vintage future.  Gimme 87 keys, damnit.    ;)

I'll remain on the list, but in the hope that the key layout get's reconsidered.

GB's may offer them often (appears to be about half, based on a quick look), but it's a hassle that really doesn't do anything except make it harder and more expensive to get keys. I don't understand the attraction and keys are often overpriced as it is.

Oh, and for the hardcore gamers who worry about hitting Win by mistake, there is a ton of ways to stop this from happening, from registry tweaks to Autohotkey, to just plain disabling the switch Personally, the key is too handy to not have it.

Let me rephrase that. They don't suck, they are just so similar to every other Korean keyboard run. The cool part about LZ was that they are different.

Agree, i think for all that money and such a special event i was hoping for something more fanciful, more unique

I believe hard anodized because they are aluminum. Power coating is for stainless steel.

black and metal grey where the most on the spreadsheet.

Red was just a random.

Only other color options besides red is:

gold
light pink
blue

These are anodized

I was just a little disappointed with the color choices, but please don't misconstrue that as a lack of interest in this GB. I am still going to try and get one :p

No reason to media blast.  Color shouldn't matter one bit since step 1 of anodizing is pickling (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pickling_%28metal%29).

This will depend on where you live and what options you have available to you. If you are lucky you can find prices around $30-40, I know some places go as high as $100. Keep in mind doing anodizing in low amounts (just 1 keyboard) tend to cost more per unit compare to doing a mass anodizing for a bulk amount.

Yup, I recently got a quote for anodizing, $30 per rack. So a single plate = $30 or 10 plates for $3 each.  (10 plates per rack max)

I'd productions, but it takes too much time.

We is preparing a new PCB and it will not be long.
But NEW PCB don't included LZ-GH.

Sometimes you just turn the LEDs on for pictures and not for practical use. Turning on Caps lock, Scroll Lock, etc for a picture is not quite as picturesque.

Stickers and lube take a big chunk of time.  Time is more money (way more than the $20 I've seen others charge).  On top of which, that would only extend the wait time for getting your shiny new board.  You can do it before or after thanks to the wonders of new plate technology  ;)

Title: Re: [IC] LZ-GH Keyboard
Post by: Acetrak on Tue, 22 January 2013, 10:38:59
I'm not sure about the differences between KMAC PCB vs A.87 aside from the LED options.

It does have the new plate that allows switch modding, and a heavier case.

I would probably not put something like blues/browns on it so whites/clears/green we'll say are $50. $20 for shipping. That is $410 without keycaps (though most people here have extras). If you don't, that's at least another $60 minimum depending on how special you want this board to be.
Title: Re: [IC] LZ-GH Keyboard
Post by: alaricljs on Tue, 22 January 2013, 10:47:35
The metal work is basically equivalent.  The design differences make almost zero difference in the end result aside from weight and KB angle.

The PCB of a KMAC is a step above, but truly presents no noticeable improvement in typing.

This looks surprisingly similar to what I expected the phantom to be.  What is the difference between this layout and the ANSI 125 plate thats being offered for the phantom GB?  other than this one already has a case of course.

I'm still interested, just trying to figure out what the difference is?

The 84-key or 86-key layout of the LZ-GH is the same layout as the Phantom ANSI150. There is no difference.

Only difference is this one comes with a case designed by LZ.

if it's the same, why won't it fit a phantom?

Phantom has a Teensy hanging off the back of the PCB. It's too thick to fit inside some cases.

Boost,

Not sure if this has/hasn't been suggested already but have you considered perhaps getting the cases and/or plate engraved?
As this would be a limited run of about 50 or so, I think having a serial number would give it the final touch that makes it a collectable or for people sitting on the fence to reach for their wallets.
Something like LZ-GH #01 or similar.
This can also lead to a GH thread with all owners and their customisations
LZ-GH #01 - Boost - 86key - Casecolor - MXcolor

Just something to consider.
Sorry if someones already thought of this

And I'm all for okooko's idea to engrave a number on it. Preferably on the plate.

Yeah, I was just thinking for $340 (or 400+ assembled TYD), the owners would like some identification, if anything it'll help keep the value and rarity.
As for choosing the numbers, a fully random number generator would be a start, but with the organisers (Boost/DrugER etc) get first dibs on what they want, likely #1, #2 but im sure other will be fine with that.

I wouldn't care what number I got, it's just a cool thing to add to it. I mean, I'd definitely like to have my lucky number (11) but I wouldn't be at all heartbroken with anything else.

Serial number is pretty cool - I'm not worried about the actual serial number but I'd prefer to see # of 50.

Maltron sign the insides of their keyboards - that would be smart.

Edit:  I think the arguments/angst/etc over specific serial numbers could be a pain.

# of 50 would be cool, but none of that other stuff. Not like they're going to be popping up on the marketplace very often, but there'd be no way I'd buy it if it had someone else's name and switch preference

I was just thinking that, possibly
  LZ - GH
#1 of 50

But tbh I think simply 'LZ-GH #1' is much better than above.
And it'll be common knowledge on GH that the first run was only 50. Future rounds can start from 51 if anything.

Once it gets going I'm sure someone will make a Post your LZGH thread where it'll have the owners specs and location just to see where in the world they are and what specs each owner has decided to go with. Also will be good for keeping the history of the KB should anyone sell it in the future (for any reason).

EDIT: We'll just wait for one of the organisers to come back with an answer before getting creative for something that may not go ahead.

At $370+, 50 units is a lot.  I'm not worried at all about availability.  Of course the Koreans could descend with multiple accounts and buy them up, but by now I'm too worn out to care.

I think people are worried because its easy to reserve a spot on something expensive with no money down and deny somebody who does have the money the chance to get it. Then when the time does come and people can't pay up it becomes difficult for people to throw money together on the spot to get a chance vs this where there is a set date and time and people should have the money

2 blue leds and a shot of water, right?

Anyhow
I have enough pink, white, blue, green to do all the boards in any 1 of those colors....   red, yellow, orange/amber didn't seem too popular so I have very low (to none at all) stock of those.

So opinions?

Gold leaf'd be too thin, and gold sheet not mailable enough, sorry.  May I recommend velum as an alternative?

Platinum is only a couple of GBP/g more than gold, if you're looking for truly expensive materials - some of the johny-come-lately's are quite... prohibitive?

Here's what you should really do in an exercise in wanton waste:  place them in a pile in front of a web cam and then live stream them being burned by cleansing fire.  Just to show those people that wanted to pay money to use one that you have more money to waste to use them as poisonous kindling.
Title: Re: [IC] LZ-GH Keyboard
Post by: asura on Thu, 24 January 2013, 17:08:01
The whole biting a gold coin to see if it's solid gold, or gold plated lead was... yes to determine if you could deform it with your teeth - but no, if it deformed it was lead not gold.  Whilst gold is very ductile (one of the most ductile metals in-fact which is how gold leaf gets so thin) it is harder - both in hardness, and in plastic+elastic deformation i.e. it's less mailable than a number of metals...

In other words, you can hammer it thinner, or draw it into smaller wire than lead - but you'll expend more energy reducing a piece of gold from state a to state b than you would taking lead through the same process (if possible)...

I'm still unsure why the Korean customs don't come to geekhack to sell their boards. Do they not want to make money? What happens instead is certain people get them, mark them up and sell at ridiculous prices. I would think the manufacturer would want to make that money.

This is a lot of money that I'm planning on spending tomorrow approx $350 with a total of (350 x 50) = $17,500.  Is there any kind of protection we get, or are we taking the risk of someone running away with our money?

I doubt it. The amount of people on these forums who back up what they say they'll buy with their wallets is actually a small number. They're also the ones with all the cool keyboards/keys. So go in the "post your... " threads and find those people and count how many posted ITT. :D

One more thing, at this price, will these really sell out as fast as everyone is making it seem?
Probably not, especially being short notice.

For me, it's the layout.

As I mentioned in the other thread, I'd be willing to trade the 87 key pcb and plate from my LZ-S for an 86 key pcb and plate if that's more your style. My plate is royal blue, and already has (clear with black springs) switches installed, if 87key is more your style.

I missed your post.
It's tempting, but we have no way of knowing how compatible these would be, besides, I've pretty much got the keyboard I was after. I will have to give it some thought, there is still some time before all of the slots fill.
